Remember when we said the latest season of Formula E was going to be unpredictable? Well, what can we say – we’ve had four different winners in four races and each battle has been won in the final minutes of the race. Welcome to the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, where it seems unpredictability is the only certainty. Now, as the series moves from South and Central America to Asia, we’re about to do it all again – for the 50th time in Formula E’s history – as we prepare for the 2019 HKT Hong Kong E-Prix on March 10.
Still catching up? No problem. Here’s all that’s happened in the season so far…
Di Grassi's back on track
Sounds familiar? Well, it should do as Audi Sport Abt Scheffler’s Lucas di Grassi made a powerful and calculated comeback in Mexico City for the second season running. Clinching the win this time around, the Brazilian boosted his Championship standing, climbing up to fourth place with 34 points to his name. As the Championship rumbles on into Asia, expect more former champs to launch their comebacks as we hit the familiar streets of Hong Kong. We're only just getting started.
Underdogs still reign supreme
Despite the best efforts of our four former champions, the top spots in the standings still fall to three unlikely lads, with Mahindra Racing’s Jerome d’Ambrosio leading the way with 53 points to his name, followed by BMW i Andretti Motorsport's Antonio Felix da Costa in second and Sam Bird in third for Envision Virgin Racing. As for our reigning champions Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler and Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah), they’re still nowhere to be seen after an entirely unpredictable and frantic four rounds of Formula E.
Crash chaos and energy meltdowns are commonplace
If the past four races are anything to go by, the fifth season of Formula E is more chaotic than any every before. Both crashes or energy management issues have proved critical turning points in every race to date, blowing any kind of pre-race plans or strategy to pieces. Well, this is Formula E, after all - expect the unexpected.
ATTACK MODE is a proven game changer
Since the very first use of ATTACK MODE in the season opener in Saudi Arabia, the new in-race power boost has spiced up the racing action beyond all expectations. Expect more of the same in Hong Kong.
