Formula E founder Alejandro Agag shortlisted in Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards 2025

Alejandro Agag, the visionary founder behind Formula E, Extreme E, the E1 Series, and the upcoming Extreme H championship, has been shortlisted in the prestigious Transition Advocator category at the Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards 2025.

Alejandro Agag

The People of Purpose category recognises individuals making an exceptional contribution to the world’s energy transition. Agag’s inclusion highlights his tireless efforts to reimagine motorsport as a platform to accelerate the shift towards net zero and clean energy innovation.

From launching the world’s first all-electric racing series with Formula E in 2014, to more recently pioneering Extreme E, the off-road championship racing in climate-affected regions using cutting-edge electric SUVs, and founding the world’s first all-electric race boat championship in E1, Agag has used the power of sport to bring together governments, manufacturers, investors, and fans around the globe.

"To be recognised among the world's leading energy transition advocates is a huge honour," said Alejandro Agag.

“I’ve always believed that sport has the power to inspire change, and through motorsport, we’ve created a platform that pushes sustainable technologies forward while entertaining and educating at the same time. This nomination is not just a personal milestone, it’s a recognition of the entire ecosystem working behind the scenes to deliver innovation at speed.”

Under Agag’s leadership, the motorsport industry has become a testbed for clean energy innovation. Formula E helped spark a global EV revolution, with electric car sales growing from just 320,000 in 2014 to over 14 million annually. Extreme E has broken new ground in environmental storytelling and technology, introducing an industry-first hydrogen fuel cell system for event operations, setting new sustainability blueprints for global sporting events to follow.

His most recent initiatives are the E1 Series, which sees E1 RaceBirds ‘fly’ thanks to electric propulsion combined with foil technology, and Extreme H, launching in 2025 as the world’s first hydrogen-powered motorsport championship, which aim to tackle emissions in some of the hardest to reach sectors: marine and heavy transport.

Extreme H, is an evolution of Extreme E and will get underway later this year as the FIA Extreme H World Cup, the world’s first hydrogen powered motorsport series. This shift toward clean energy technology will demonstrate how hydrogen can redefine motorsport, on and off the racecourse, pushing boundaries for sustainability in the automotive and energy industries.

Agag’s work continues to drive the global conversation around clean mobility, technological innovation, and cross-sector collaboration, all essential contributors to accelerating the global energy transition.

The Reuters Global Energy Transition Awards will take place in New York on 24 June 2025, during its flagship Global Energy Transition conference, which brings together the most influential voices shaping the future of energy.
