Daniel Abt is one of three German drivers who will be taking part in the Berlin ePrix double header this weekend.
Along with Nick Heidfeld and Maro Engel, the Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport driver will have the full support of the home crowd as he seeks to go one better than the strong second place that he scored at last year’s race, held at the Karl-Marx-Allee track.
Ahead of his biggest race of the season, here’s his guide to the Tempelhofring:
“First of all I have to say it’s a pretty cool design. Getting into Turn 1, it’s a type of corner we have never really seen before, because it very long and very unusual for street tracks. Normally you cannot build corners like that but in Tempelhof we have freedom and I like that they came up with a bit of a special solution.
“Next there is a double corner with Turn 2 and Turn 3, which runs all the way up to Turn 4. I guess that Turn 5 will be flat, so you really need to get Turn 4 right. This will be a very important corner because then there is the long run all the way down to Turn 6, which is also the best overtaking spot, and that was something we were missing in Season 1.
“Turn 6 looks wide, which is also good, because it’s slow enough to overtake but also wide enough to try some stuff, so it should be an exciting place to watch. Then there are some faster corners with Turn 7, Turn 8 – which is probably also flat – Turn 9, which is a 180-degree corner.
“Turn 10 is going to be an important one because that leads onto the start/finish straight again and the second best overtaking spot into Turn 1. I think for sure more of the action with take place into Turn 1 and Turn 6.
“The track surface will be different [to normal] and we don’t know how the tyre is going to behave, so that’s a bit of an unknown path for everyone. For sure it’s going to be different to what we normally have on street tracks because it’s rougher, we saw more degradation [in Season 1], so it will be another factor.
“For sure it’s going to be bumpy, but apart from Monaco, every Formula E track is bumpy and I think we have seen more bumps than this so it’s not going to be something special.”
