The highs and lows of Porsche's Formula E homecoming

Heading into the 2026 Hankook Berlin E-Prix double-header, German giant Porsche had a point to prove.

Since Round 5 of the 2025/26 Formula E championship in Jeddah, momentum in the teams’ championship looked to be swinging the way of Jaguar TCS Racing, with the British manufacturer outscoring Porsche by 40 points over the last two rounds. But could the German giant turn the tide in Berlin in front of their home crowd?

Anniversary celebrations

On top of the usual fanfare of a Porsche home race, the team brought back one of motorsport's most unique - and loved - liveries for the weekend. The “Pink Pig” livery is a favourite among race fans, and was brought out to help Porsche celebrate 75 years of motorsport.

“When the race-ready Porsche 917/20 first rolled out on the tarmac at the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans, it initially left the world’s press and race spectators scratching their heads,” Porsche stated about the birth of the pink pig.

“It was covered in the lines and names for meat cuts made by butchers, set on top of a race car coloured with a vibrant flesh-like paint.”

Joining in the celebrations, Porsche welcomed a plethora of drivers and iconic cars from their past and present, including former Formula 1 driver and Porsche Brand Ambassador, Mark Webber.

“Porsche has never been shy from new technology,” Webber explains. “And every category that Porsche has ever entered in, they've generally won and had great success in. Formula E's been no different.

“They want to showcase their technology and the electrification into street cars. I think it's obvious that they were going to be involved here, and normally when Porsche do do racing, they do it pretty well.”

Round 7

Going into Round 7, the Porsche duo of Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Mueller looked set for a day of challenging for the bigger points-paying positions. Wehrlein qualified for the E-Prix in second, narrowly missing out on pole to fellow championship rival, Edoardo Mortara. Meanwhile, Mueller made it through to the duels stages, but missed out to Dan Ticktum in the quarter-final stages, and ultimately qualified in sixth.

The race started well for Wehrlein and the German driver remained in the leading pack heading into the mandatory PIT BOOST stops, however things quickly went wrong. Upon coming into the pits, his stop was noticeably longer than the enforced PIT BOOST stop time, as the #94 crew were forced to repair what looked like a puncture - leaving him dead last when he returned to the race.

It was a different story for teammate Mueller. The Swiss driver found himself inside the top 10 up to the PIT BOOST stops, having started sixth, and pushed hard when he emerged from the pit lane - taking six minutes of ATTACK MODE and slicing through the top six to hit the front on Lap 29.

Porsche and Mueller looked to have managed things about as perfectly as could be imagined, with track position and a four second lead having taken P1 - all with four percentage points of usable energy in-hand over those around him.

In the end, he couldn’t be caught, and on the 69th attempt, Nico Mueller finally reached the top step of the podium - having led the most laps this season prior to Round 7.

Round 8

A Formula E double-header allows drivers very little time to celebrate or commiserate on the results of the previous day, and attention very quickly turned to Round 8. Could Porsche do it again and bring home another win?

In qualifying, Wehrlein did one better than the day before, claiming his 11th Formula E pole position, after a nail biting final duel against DS PENSKE’s Taylor Barnard. Mueller couldn’t replicate his previous performance and failed to make the duels, qualifying down in 12th.

REPORT: Mitch Evans wins enthralling Hankook Berlin E-Prix Round 8

In the race, Wehrlein wasn’t cursed with any of the back luck of the previous day, leading the pack into Turn 1 with the pair trading the lead throughout the opening few laps in what was set to be a tactical encounter with strategy to the fore.

Throughout the opening laps of the race and the first ATTACK MODE activation, Wehrlein remained in contention - albeit using more energy at the front than the challengers in pursuit. On lap 27, Jaguar’s Mitch Evans hit the front with energy in-hand. It looked like he'd timed things perfectly with a six-minute initial ATTACK MODE boost to take P1.

The second ATTACK MODE activations saw Evans blink last with now a two-second gap in first spot. The gamble paid off for the Kiwi driver, and he was able to cruise home and take the race win, ahead of Nissan’s Oliver Rowland - who had managed to creep past Wehrlein across the start/finish straight.

Mueller finished the day in P13, after being caught up in the midfield scramble for much of the race, a pointless end to an otherwise stellar weekend.

Despite being unable to convert his pole position into the race victory, Wehrlein appeared relatively content with the result in the post-race media pen, acknowledging the challenging nature of leading from the front at the Tempelhof circuit.

The championship fight…

Overall, Porsche’s weekend at Tempelhof in front of their adoring home crowd reaped rewards, thanks to a race win, a podium and a pole position. Currently, they lead the teams’ championship on 176 points - 13 points clear of Jaguar TCS Racing.

In the manufacturers’ standings, they also lead the way, having achieved an impressive 228 points over the opening eight rounds of the championship. Nearest rivals Jaguar (once again) trail them by 14 points.

Pascal Wehrlein continues to lead the drivers’ championship, but only by three points - a margin which can be quickly overturned. Thanks to his result in Berlin, Nico Mueller has advanced up the standings into fifth.

With half the season still to play out, anything can happen in Formula E.
