The home heroes of the Berlin E-Prix

Home heroes Pascal Wehrlein and Maximilian Günther look ahead to a blockbuster weekend at the Berlin E-Prix.

A home race is a special affair for any driver, and this weekend it's the turn of Pascal Wehrlein and Maximilian Günther to race in front of their home crowd. Here's what both drivers had to say ahead of the E-Prix:

PREVIEW: Berlin is back as Formula E returns for Rounds 7 and 8

Maximilian Günther

“Berlin is always a special race with all the German support, all the German crowd coming this weekend. It's amazing to receive this support. The track is super unique, we know it very well from Formula E. Obviously, it's a different tarmac here that we don't have on other tracks.

“The circuit is actually pretty short, and there are not so many corners, but it's really about attention to detail and getting all those small details right in order to be up there in qualifying and a bit similar in the race. Races here look chaotic from the outside, but actually they're very much about being smart and getting energy in the pocket.

“I obviously have good memories from this place, I had a podium here in my first Maserati season. That was amazing, just to be on the podium and having all these German fans cheering for you. The win was obviously special, but it was during COVID as you said and without the spectators it was not the same. One day I hope to repeat this again with the full capacity here.

“We've had a rough start to the year, we're definitely lacking in the race on the efficiency side, but we are very determined to keep extracting the best from our car, and put ourselves in a strong position to execute a strong weekend.”

Günther is currently 16th in the drivers' standings with eight points on the board, having not scored in the last four rounds - a recent run of form that he'll be looking to correct this weekend.

Pascal Wehrlein

Meanwhile, 2023/24 Formula E champion, Pascal Wehrlein is engaged in a close fight at the top of the championship. The German driver currently sits in 1st on 83 points - 11 points ahead of closest championship rival, Edoardo Mortara.

Wehrlein has rarely put a foot wrong this season, having scored points in all six rounds, an achievement only matched by one other driver (Sebastien Buemi). Now, heading into his home race, and the home race of the Porsche team, all eyes will be on Pascal Wehrlein. Will he be the one to take control of the 2025/26 championship?

I mean, I’m still missing the win here, but the podium was quite cool last year, the pole position for sure. What am I looking forward to the most? Well, first of all, I heard we’re expecting a big crowd this weekend, so that is quite nice.

NEWS: Porsche Formula E Team to race with iconic Pink Pig livery in Berlin

“The fight for the championship is obviously still quite early, but it’s in a very important phase right now. With it being our home race we’ll have a lot of support here with fans, family members, friends, members from the team, from Porsche, so that is is very cool, but once it's it's time to step into the car, I will forget all of that and just focus on my driving and focus on on winning.”
