Pascal Wehrlein was the quickest on track at the end of Free Practice 2 in Mexico City, as the reigning Teams’ and Manufacturers’ World Champions running a special silver livery to celebrate 75 years of Porsche.
Wehrlein has won twice in Mexico City, and will be looking to make it a hatrick for the race later today. His best time was 1m05.141s, with Sebastien Buemi second best 0.160s. Taylor Barnard was third for DS PENSKE, with Nico Müller fourth for Porsche. Championship leader Jake Dennis rounded out the top five for Andretti, as they celebrated their 150th race alongside the championship.
As it happened...
Drivers headed out bright and early around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, with the final practice session of the weekend starting at 07:30 local time. With cooler temps compared to Friday’s FP1, the grip on the track was low and made things rather slippy.
There was an early brake-by-wire issue for Antonio Felix da Costa, with the Season 6 champ forced to jump out his Jaguar TCS Racing machine as the team looked to rectify the issue in the session and more importantly before qualifying.
Dan Ticktum had an early spin as he found the limits in his CUPRA KIRO, with his teammate Pepe Martí also having problems with his car which heavily impacted his running as he didn’t leave the garage all session.
There was a reprimand handed out for Jake Dennis for wheelspinning in the pit lane, but both him and the rest of the drivers will need to make sure they don’t do this during qualifying or the race as it’s a new rule introduced by the FIA and can be sanctioned with grid penalties. Dennis was quickest in FP1 yesterday, and won the first round in Sao Paulo last time out.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, it was Sebastien Buemi who was top with a 1m05.301s. The times were already better than the first free practice, and Buemi will be chasing a first victory at this historic Mexican venue after four previous podiums and two fastest laps.
Pascal Wehrlein snatched the quickest time with seconds to go, with Buemi unable to improve his time so had to settle for second. At the end of the session Nick Cassidy and Lucas di Grassi were noted for an incident.
