With just weeks to go until Techeetah Formula E's title defence comes to a conclusion in New York City, the Chinese team has appointed Super GT and Super Formula driver James Rossiter as its Development Driver with immediate effect.
With a background in single-seaters, the British driver first cut his teeth in karting before graduating to Formula Renault in 2002. Moving on to Formula 3, it wasn't long before Rossiter took a role as a development driver with Honda in Formula One in 2004 before taking similar roles with Force India and Super Aguri. During his time at Honda, Rossiter helped develop the Honda RA109, in which Jenson Button would eventually claim his first and only Drivers’ Championship title in 2009. Alongside his single-seater experience, Rossiter has racked up a total of six appearances in the World Endurance Championship both behind the wheel of GT cars and LMP1 category. The Brit currently races in Super GT and Super Formula in Japan.
“I’m very excited to join Techeetah as their Development Driver. Formula E is a really exciting space right now and it’s no secret that I want to be in the championship," said Rositter. "I’m still racing in Super Formula in Japan and so when role surfaced to become the championship leader’s Development Driver, it was the perfect solution." After experiencing Formula E for the first time in Berlin last year, Rossiter got back behind the wheel during the Rookie test in Marrakesh earlier this year.
“We’re extremely happy to welcome James to Techeetah. He has a wealth of experience from Formula One, Super Formula and really impressed us at the rookie test in Marrakesh earlier this year," said Techeetah Team Principal Mark Preston. "Having someone with James’ experience to help us with our development is invaluable for us. The stakes are getting higher each season and as we grow as a team, we will be adding talent to our roster, and James is the first of these announcements.”
Currently leading both the Drivers' and Teams' championship standings, all will be decided in New York City with the doubleheader season finale.
