QUALI REPORT: Wehrlein and Porsche power to maiden home pole position

Pascal Wehrlien keeps himself in World Championship contention, as he banks Porsche's first pole position in Berlin.

TAG Heuer Porsche have taken the Julius Baer Pole Position for their home E-Prix for the first time, after a stunning set of laps from Pascal Wehrlein across qualifying in Berlin. He went against Dan Ticktum, with the CUPRA KIRO also having Porsche power under the covers, but the Briton couldn’t deny the reigning World Champion from pole.

Wehrlien also gets an additional three points for the pole, which keeps him in the championship fight as his biggest rival Oliver Rowland (Nissan) starts in eighth after being given a five-place grid drop for causing a collision yesterday.

Final

Dan Ticktum and Pascal Wehrlien went head-to-head in the final Duel, with Ticktum’s only previous Duel Final being in Tokyo earlier this season. However, it was an easy win for Wehrlein who stormed to the best lap time to take his and Porsche's first pole position.

Pascal Wehrlein Duel 3

Semi Finals

Ticktum was on a mission during his Semi Final run, sailing into the final and guaranteeing himself a front-row start as he took on Oliver Rowland. This is Ticktum’s third semi-final appearance this season, with his best-ever start in Berlin being here in Season 9 when he started fourth.

The two Porsche teammates were battling next, with Wehrlein beating da Costa when they faced each other in the Mexico City Duel final, and again when they met in the Tokyo Quarters. This pattern continued, with da Costa making a mistake and overcooking it during his lap to let Wehrlein win the battle by over six tenths of a second.

Quarter Final

Dan Ticktum was flying out on his lap, setting a time that was six tenths quicker than the NEOM McLaren of Taylor Barnard. It was the first Quarter Final duel that Barnard has lost this season, but Porsche-powered Ticktum was on top.

Next was Rowland versus Vandoorne, with the two coming together in the race yesterday. Championship leader Rowland was the fastest of the two, securing a place in the Semi Final against fellow countryman Ticktum.

Anotonio Felix Da Costa Duel 1

Da Costa was next against his former teammate Robin Frijns, with Porsche power on top once again but it was close with just 0.088s in it. Unfortunately for Frijns, it wouldn’t be two back-to-back front-row stars for him.

Last up was Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Mueller, with Wehrlein on it with a stunning lap to go six tenths better than the Andretti driver. Mueller was one of only two full-time drivers who had not appeared in the Duel stages this season, with only Zane Maloney left to reach the milestone.

Group A

It was a dramatic end to the first group qualifying, with Jake Hughes bringing out the red flags in the final moments after a crash at Turn 1. It was a significant shunt for the Maserati MSG Racing driver, and especially disappointing as he was running up in second before the stoppage. His lap time was subsequently deleted for causing a red flag, which dropped him to sixth.

Jake Hughes Crash

His teammate Stoffel Vandoorne was quickest at the chequered flag, with Taylor Barnard in second. Dan Ticktum also navigated the damp conditions well to secure third, with Oliver Rowland getting lucky with Hughes’ lap time deletion to be promoted into the Duels after finishing fifth.

Lucas di Grassi didn’t leave the garage at all after a big crash at the same spot as Hughes earlier in the day, with the Lola Yamaha ABT garage having a big task ahead to get him ready to race later today.

Group B

As the track dried, the sun even made an appearance for the first time this weekend. Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa both sailed through to the Duels for Porsche, ending the group in first and second respectively.

Yesterday’s front-row starter Robin Frijns made it into the Duels in third, with Nico Mueller taking the last spot to finish fourth. Mitch Evans, who won at Tempelhof yesterday, missed out on the next stage of qualifying by just 0.030s.

NEWS: Felipe Drugovich to step in for Nyck de Vries at Mahindra in Berlin

His teammate, Nick Cassidy, finished 11th and last so will start from the back of the grid again. Felipe Drugovich had looked quick in practice, but ended the session in 10th.
