Maximilian Guenther continued his incredible run in Jakarta, with the DS PENSKE topping seven of the last eight sessions in the Indonesian capital. After his win in Shanghai, the German driver will be hoping to replicate his success here in Season 9 when he managed both Julius Baer Pole Positions, a podium and a victory.
He was joined in the top five by TAG Heuer Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa, Edoardo Mortara for Mahindra Racing, Nissan’s Oliver Rowland and Andretti’s Nico Mueller. For Rowland, a rare spin at the end of the session saw the rear of his car in the barriers before the start-finish straight, but he was able to get going again.
As it happened…
With just under 15 minutes of the session underway, Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns brought out the red flags after making contact with the barriers at Turn 7 and suffering a failure of the front-right suspension. Replays showed him going over a bump on the track, sending him along the wall and into the barrier before saying the moment was “not his fault”.
NEOM McLaren’s Taylor Barnard also clipped the wall on the beginning of the start-finish straight, but it didn’t prove too costly.
As a result of the red flag, Free Practice 1 was extended by ten minutes by the final moments championship leader Oliver Rowland had an uncharacteristic spin and hit the barrier. The Nissan driver was able to get going again, but it was a surprising shunt and a rare mistake from the Yorkshireman.

The session was topped by Maximilian Guenther who set a time of 1m06.050s, with Antonio Felix da Costa in second and Edoardo Mortara third.
