Formula E drivers and teams unite for Pantai beach clean-up in Jakarta

Drivers, teams, commercial partners, staff, local stakeholders and the community of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will come together to clear plastic and ocean waste from Pantai beach in Ancol next to the International Jakarta E-Prix Circuit ahead of the Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix this weekend.

Volunteers from race teams, including the drivers themselves in addition to partners and local stakeholder and community groups, including JakPro and Waste4Change, will join Formula E staff to work at Pantai Beach in the Ancol resort, where Round 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will take place this weekend as part of the series sustainability and impact strategy.

This marks the second year that Formula E has led a beach clean-up in Jakarta. In 2024, volunteers collected 120 bags of waste, equating to over 440kg of waste, setting the foundation for what is now becoming a meaningful tradition ahead of race day.

The refuse bags recovered from the clean-up will be responsibly processed by Waste4Change - the Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix’s waste management service that focuses on adding value to hard-to-recycle materials. Examples include transforming discarded plastics and polystyrene into useful products, such as furniture made from waste.

Instead of sending it to landfill, this approach underscores a powerful opportunity to create a circular ecosystem from waste materials. Through these ongoing efforts, Formula E’s initiatives reflect its ongoing mission to show that high-performance sport, environmental stewardship and community engagement can go hand in hand - delivering a powerful legacy to the local community alongside world-changing on-track action.

Each year, more than 14 million tons of plastics end up in the ocean, with much of the plastic waste produced in Indonesia finding its way into rivers and coastal waters. The beach clean-up, focused on tackling plastic pollution, marine debris and other ocean waste, supports the series’ ongoing commitment to community engagement and making a tangible, positive impact on the local environment and community, localised to the specific needs of the host city.

The initiative will remove waste, raise awareness about the growing problem of ocean plastics, and empower local stakeholders — including children and community groups — to care for their own environment.

Julia Pallé, VP of Sustainability, Formula E, said: “Plastic pollution is a growing problem that affects everyone around the world, and is a growing challenge here in Jakarta - threatening both coastal habitats and the health of nearby communities.

"At every race, we are committed to engaging with local communities and aim to leave a place better than we found it. We are united as a championship with the community to clean the local area of plastic rubbish and ensure it is sustainably managed and not put back into landfill.”

To further minimise waste at this weekend’s Formula E event, several sustainable initiatives will be in place: Free hydration stations will offer water refills to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles, spectators will also receive biodegradable eco-cups made from corn starch flour as an alternative to traditional plastic and in addition, six dedicated waste stations will be available to support proper recycling and plastic waste management.

The theme of community empowerment when it comes to environmental stewardship is carried through this season’s Better Futures Fund recipient, Amirah, who are using the funds to deliver the CLIMATEABILITY project, aimed at empowering people with disabilities, women, and youth to become climate leaders.
