FP3 REPORT: Cassidy on top after rain impacts running in Shanghai

It was a brief third free practice session in Shanghai after heavy rainfall disrupted the session.

Rain impacted the third and final free practice in Shanghai, with Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy quickest after a brief time on the wet track. These results from free practice will determine the starting grid if qualifying is unable to take place later today, so those early laps really mattered.

The schedule for Round 11 has already been adjusted to try and get the most time on track with the heavy rain falling in the Chinese municipality, and if qualifying can’t go ahead it will be Nick Cassidy and Jaguar TCS Racing who will start the race from the first place grid slot.

SCHEDULE UPDATE: 2025 Shanghai E-Prix Round 11

Yesterday's second place podium finisher Jean-Eric Vergne was second, with Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns in third. Mitch Evans had a track limits infringement but classified fourth, with Antonio Felix da Costa fifth for TAG Heuer Porsche.

As it happened…

All 22 cars headed out on track, but it was clear the conditions were tricky with the rain continuing to fall. As the grid banked their early laps at the Shanghai International Circuit, there were several high speed slips from the likes of Oliver Rowland, Dan Ticktum and Maximilian Guenther through the gravel at Turn 6.

Conditions meant that aquaplaning was almost inevitable, and after collecting feedback from the drivers the session was red flagged after the first seven minutes. The practice session was extended to 08:00 local time, adding an additional 20 minutes on to the schedule, and it was determined the grid would be decided by the timings from the running this morning.

However, with 15 minutes still left on the clock it was confirmed by Race Control that the session would not resume for safety reasons.

That theoretically places Nick Cassidy on pole if qualifying can’t occur in a few hours, which will be his first of Season 11. Jean-Eric Vergne had the second best time, with Robin Frijns third.

The amended sporting schedule for Round 11 of the 2025 Hankook Shanghai E-Prix is as follows. All times local (UTC+8hrs):

09:00: Qualifying
13:00: Round 11
