DS PENSKE duo Guenther and Vergne on their special Shanghai one-two result

Maximilian Guenther played it cool with a tactical tour de force from pole to double his win tally for the season as the German headed home DS PENSKE's maiden Formula E one-two.

It was a second victory of Season 11 for Maximilian Guenther, as the young German added to his winning tally in Formula E with DS PENSKE after a showstopping spectacular in Shanghai.

Guenther held firm off the line as NEOM McLaren's rookie Taylor Barnard and the TAG Heuer Porsche of Pascal Wehrlein piled on early pressure. Porsche's reigning champion pushed on and battled with standings leader Oliver Rowland (Nissan) for control of the race, while Guenther strategically bided his time. Even as Barnard recovered to lead the pack mid-race briefly, Guenther never looked rattled.

After being one of the first to use the ultra-fast recharging technology for his PIT BOOST stop and having his final ATTACK MODE left until the last moments of the race, Guenther was able to pass Rowland for the lead with a couple of laps to go and from there kept his foot to the floor to finish the race with a hugely respectable seven-second lead.

Behind him, the typical Formula E battles were bubbling up and in an unexpected twist it was Jean-Eric Vergne who came from fifth to second in the final few corners to deny CUPRA KIRO’s Dan Ticktum a second consecutive podium. Instead, it was Barnard who once again earned himself another piece of silverware in his first full-time season and promoted him to second in the standings behind Rowland on 171 points.

“Amazing day, it's just amazing,” Guenther said after the chequered flag. “One-two for the team. I'm so happy, a real masterclass in this race. I think strategy, the pace, the execution, the moves, everything was nice, and at the end, I knew when I got the overlap on Rowland and more energy, I just had to go and get my head down and try to disappear, which we managed. Extremely, extremely happy.

"It’s always a combination of everything. You have to be fast to execute a good strategy, and we did both today. I made the right move at the right time," he added. “To execute the race the way we did makes me very proud. There’s so much hard work that goes into this win. It’s been a tough past few weeks, the momentum wasn’t really on our side and today we got it back in the best possible way with 1-2 as a team, it was a very special achievement.”

"For Phil [Charles] to be there it’s amazing, it’s a pleasure to work with him - he's a really good leader. Phil and Jay [Penske] built this team with a very strong mission.

“That’s why I came here because I see what this team is really capable of, and this is a great step for us, to win in our second race here."

The win vaults Guenther to third in the championship standings, just two points shy of Barnard in second, and throws him firmly back into the mix as the season enters its home stretch with six rounds to go.

For Vergne, who was fifth at the start of the final lap, he stated that he only knew a podium could be possible as he started the last loop of the renowned circuit.

“I saw the guys fighting quite hard and I knew that I had a bit more energy and when I was looking, they were lifting later. So I assumed I was in a stronger position, so I just waited for the best moment to make the moves, and that was the last lap.”
