QUALI REPORT: Barnard scoops pole in Monaco after Rowland mistake

NEOM McLaren's Taylor Barnard secured his second Julius Baer Pole Position of the season, one year on from his debut.

One year on from making his Formula E debut, Taylor Barnard and NEOM McLaren have achieved the Julius Baer Pole Position around the streets of Monaco. It was a hard fought battle to the Final, going up against CUPRA KIRO’s Dan Ticktum who has been rapid all race day, but a rare mistake from Oliver Rowland resulted in an easy victory in the Duel Final.

This marks Barnard’s second pole in Formula E, despite being only 19-years-old, after he did the same in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He has achieved multiple podiums during his ‘rookie year’ after filling in for an injured Sam Bird here in Monaco and Berlin in 2024, but he has yet to secure a victory – could this be the weekend?

Rowland will line-up on the front row of the grid, with Ticktum and Nyck de Vries of Mahindra Racing together on the second row. Big names like reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche) will be starting in fifth, and last year's Monaco E-Prix winner Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) down in eighth.

Final

The fight for pole was over just moments into the Final, as Nissan’s Oliver Rowland made a rare error on his only flying lap as he started his climb up Beau Rivage. Limping up to Casino Square, Taylor Barnard was able to swoop past and continue his lap to achieve his second pole position in Formula E.

Oliver Rowland Replay 3

Semi Finals

Oliver Rowland was the first victor of the Semis, as the Nissan driver went head-to-head with Nyck de Vries. Although it wasn’t the result Mahindra wanted, it’s still a great result in Monaco for the Dutchman who has never previously started higher than eighth in Monaco. Mahindra are also guaranteed their highest start of this season, as their previous best was fifth for both de Vries and Edoardo Mortara.

Taylor Barnard Duel 2

The next Duel was against Dan Ticktum and Taylor Barnard, but despite topping every session of the race weekend so far the final was not meant to be for Ticktum. Instead, it was Barnard who sailed through to the last Duel after a mega lap – the quickest of the Duels so far.

Quarter Finals

First up was Nyck de Vries verus Jake Dennis, with the Mahindra Racing pilot going quickest of the two. It’s been a good weekend for the team so far as they’ve been displaying lots of potential, despite his teammate Edoardo Mortara just missing out on the Duels.

Next was the turn of Oliver Rowland and Wehrlein, who achieved pole here last year. Unfortunately for TAG Heuer Porsche driver, he was unable to repeat it and was knocked out of the Duels by Rowland and Nissan

Taylor Barnard stormed through to the Semis, beating last year’s winner in Monaco, Mitch Evans, by almost four tenths of a second.

The final Duel was between Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns and Dan Ticktum of CUPRA KIRO, and Ticktum continued his rapid pace to progress through to the next stage of qualifying.

Group A

Championship leader Rowland was the quickest in the first group, leading fellow countryman Jake Dennis. They were joined in the Duels by Nyck de Vries and Wehrlein, with both DS PENSKEs unable to qualify in the top four.

Sam Bird Replay 1

Sam Bird made a moment coming out of the tunnel, missing the chicane and bailing on his lap. He managed to get another go, but in the end had to settle for sixth. Miami pole-sitter Norman Nato was unable to replicate his success from last time out, going ninth for the Nissan team at his almost-home E-Prix.

Group B

Dan Ticktum continued his strong run of form by topping his group, after doing the same in both free practice sessions. He will be joined in the Duels by Mitch Evans, as well as Taylor Barnard and Robin Frijns.

It was a disappointing session for Nick Cassidy who once again missed out on the Duels, and finished his group in 10th. Antonio Felix da Costa was also downbeat after his group and has to settle for the eighth row of the grid for the race in a matter of hours.

Both Maserati MSG Racing stars, Stoffel Vandoorne and Jake Hughes, also failed to get into the Duels at their home race on the Season 11 calendar. However, overtaking is possible in Monaco with Formula E, with 197 moves over last year’s race.
