ABB celebrates 100-race milestone as Title Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship

ABB is celebrating 100 races in partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as Title Partner, exemplifying a shared vision for electrification, automation and sustainability, while developing innovative technologies that are designed to outrun.

Marrakesh 2018 start

Since the collaboration began back in 2018, ABB and Formula E have pushed the boundaries of technological discovery, paving the way for a cleaner, leaner and more efficient future in motorsport, industry and beyond. Together, they have overseen four whole generations of new race cars, with the new GEN3 Evo race car - capable of blistering acceleration that is 30% faster than the current F1 car - competing in 16 races all around the world.

One of ABB’s most significant contributions to Formula E has been its role as the Official Charging Partner since the GEN3 era, where Formula E introduced the world’s fastest, most powerful, most efficient and most sustainable electric race car ever made. It was a sign that transitioning to electrical and more efficient alternatives should not compromise performance, but enhance it.

Working closely with engineers from the FIA and Formula E, ABB E-mobility developed an advanced and reliable charging solution that embodies the championship’s sporting credentials while mirroring ABB’s new ‘Engineered to Outrun’ philosophy - which encapsulates the development of leading technologies to help industries become more productive, efficient and sustainable so they can outperform.

The ABB charger was designed with the latest power electronics technology, ensuring optimal performance with the smallest possible footprint, capable of delivering 160kW while charging two vehicles simultaneously. It allows teams to efficiently charge their race cars while minimising space requirements; guaranteeing consistent performance worldwide, regardless of local power sources; while reducing the volume of international freight between races.

Beyond charging, ABB has introduced key innovations to Formula E that enhance efficiency and reliability both on and off the track.

Installed in the Formula E TV compound, ABB’s UPS ensures uninterrupted live race broadcasts, even in the event of a grid power failure. The bespoke system was developed by ABB’s specialist team to maximize efficiency and reliability for broadcasters and viewers worldwide.

Meanwhile, ABB Ability Optimax® advanced energy management software is deployed at race circuits to monitor and analyse total race-specific energy output, helping to optimise energy efficiency across the series’ at-track operations.

So far as technological performance and environmental sustainability are key priorities of the partnership, so too is social development and diversity. Within this focus, ABB’s support as an Official Partner of Formula E’s FIA Girls on Track programme is a core example of where intent meets impact.

Benefiting more than 170 young women at track at all race locations, ABB and Formula E deliver interactive educational workshops for young women looking to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths - all key subjects for success in motorsport. So far since its foundation, it has benefited more than 4,500 young women.
