QUALI REPORT: Wehrlein on pole as Porsche lock out the front row in Mexico

The TAG Heuer Porsche drivers were in their own league in Mexico, with Pascal Wehrlein being the one to clinch the Julius Baer Pole Position and three important championship points.

Pascal Wehrlein managed back-to-back Julius Baer Pole Positions in Mexico City, with the TAG Heuer Porsche driver breaking the record for the most career poles at a circuit – with four now around this Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit.

Wehrlein will be joined on the front row of the grid by teammate Antonio Felix da Costa, with the two drivers achieving Porsche their first front-row lockout in Formula E.

RESULTS: Starting grid for the 2025 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix

Jean-Eric Vergne will start in third for DS PENSKE, with Oliver Rowland disappointed with a fourth place for Nissan after his early rapid pace in the qualifying session. Mitch Evans placed his Jaguar TCS Racing car in fifth, with Maximilian Guenther sixth for DS PENSKE. Season 9 winner here, Jake Dennis, starts seventh, with Edoardo Mortara getting himself into the Duels for Mahindra Racing to line up eighth.

Despite the threat of rain, it was a dry session but still full of drama. During the group stages, both Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy and Envision Racing’s Sebatien Buemi had their lap times deleted after progressing through to the Duels. It was a big knockback for the drivers, who both finished on the podium here last season and will start in 21st (Buemi) and 22nd (Cassidy).

Final

Da Costa was quickest in the first and third sector in the final showdown, but a mistake at the chicane meant he lost a lot of time and handed the pole to Pascal Wehrlein. It is still a solid result for the German giants, who lock out the front-row ahead of Round 2. “I had this,” da Costa told his team on the radio, sounding unhappy with the way his car was handling.

Semi Finals

Wehrlein sailed through to the Final Duel after going up against Oliver Rowland who made a mistake in the final sector. “I should have easily beaten him”, the Nissan driver stated after the qualifying session.

Next it was the turn of Da Costa and Jean-Eric Vergne, with the battle between the two being very close over the lap. However, it was the Season 6 champion who got the better lap, and would now take on his teammate in the Final.

Quarter Finals

First up it was Rowland versus Evans, with the Yorkshireman progressing through to the next round of qualifying. Next up, Wehrlein took on Mortara but the reigning World Champ was in another league, going almost a second quicker than the Mahinda driver who struggled with his braking.

Antonio Felix da Costa beat Jake Dennis in a battle of Porsche power, with Jean-Eric Vergne going three-tenths quicker than his DS PENSKE teammate Maximilian Guenther around the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Group A

The session started with grey clouds ahead, with all 11 drivers from the group keen to set a lap time early. Stoffel Vandoorne set the early pace, but as the damp track dried the times kept falling.

By the chequered flag it was reigning World Champion Pascal Wehrlein who topped the session, with Oliver Rowland in second and Sebastien Buemi third. However, just moments after the session finished it was noted that the Season 2 champion was under investigation  for a technical infringement. His lap times were later deleted, promoting Edoardo Mortara into the Duels.

Mitch Evans finished fourth at the line, but was promoted to third after Buemi’s lap times were removed.

David Beckmann had a moment going into Turn 1, with the CUPA KIRO driver experiencing some struggles over the Mexico weekend after needing a rebuild of the car overnight after contact with the wall in FP1.

Group B

Maximilian Guenther flew through into the Duels, going quickest of his group in his DS PENSKE. Jake Dennis slotted into second, with the Season 9 champion wanting to replicate the victory he achieved here in his championship-winning season. Nick Cassidy crossed the chequered flag in third, but had a lap time deleted for a technical infringement and was dropped out of the Duels.

Da Costa was promoted to third, with Jean-Eric Vergne now in fourth after Cassidy’s deletion.
