It’s been a busy race week so far for Pascal Wehrlein. Not only is he the most recent victor around this Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit, but since winning here last season he’s gone on to become the World Champion with Porsche.
Despite starting Season 11 with the Julius Baer Pole Position in São Paulo, his opening round of the GEN3 Evo era came to an abrupt halt after making contact with Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy. Wehrlein’s car was flipped, hitting the wall and left him upside down, with the race consequently red flagged as he was extracted.

Now back to business and well-rested in Mexico, the champ will look to add to his tally of two wins at this special circuit.
“It was a nasty crash and luckily we have the halo nowadays and I escaped with small injuries,” the Porsche driver said about his crash in Round 1. “Nothing serious and I had a bit of time now since the last race so I could properly recover. Now I am looking forward to being back in Mexico.”
With three pole positions here, most recently in 2024, and two victories plus some very close calls over the years, Wehrlein will undoubtedly have some targets on his back going into the race weekend.
“I think it’s fair [to say I’m the driver to beat in Mexico],” he continued. “Every time we have been in Mexico so far, it was competitive or penalised but still being competitive. Very good memories and very good experiences.
“I think, especially in the GEN2 car, we were not competitive on all the tracks, this was always an outstanding weekend for us which was difficult to understand. I think with the GEN3 car we were also quite competitive on the other tracks and we have brought a lot of consistency into our performance on different tracks.

“I wish we knew why Mexico has always been a good weekend for us, which also doesn’t mean this weekend will be the same! We still need to do a good job.”
As well as Mexico City, which is soon to be the ninth time we race around this incredible venue, Formula E also took a trip to Puebla in Season 7. For Porsche and Wehrlein, it should have been the home of their maiden Formula E win, however a failure in their tyre declaration protocol meant both team and driver were disqualified.
As we prepare for the second race of the GEN3 Evo era – Formula E’s latest race car – it’s clear there’s still a lot of learning to be done up and down the paddock. Especially on elements such as ATTACK MODE, which now gives the drivers all-wheel drive in an awesome addition.

“I think we are in the process of understanding ATTACK MODE with GEN3 Evo, and I think also on different tracks it will be different. In São Paulo the ATTACK MODE was super powerful and it changed the dynamic a lot.
“Mexico is not super energy sensitive and also overtaking is a bit more difficult, so I would assume that the ATTACK MODE is less powerful but let’s see. We are always open to surprises!
“A good qualifying is important, so I would imagine you would need to start in the top five to win the race. It’s possible to overtake, but it’s not very easy. As always you need to have a good car balance, manage your energy well, do a good strategy with ATTACK MODE and bring the car home in one piece.”
RACE RECAP: Mexico City's best moments
Formula E is on a record-breaking streak, with none of the last 16 races having been won from pole position. In fact, the last driver to convert pole to the victory was Pascal here in Mexico last season. Will he be the one to end the streak this weekend?
