FREE PRACTICE 2: Dennis tops the times in final São Paulo practice

It’s Race Day in São Paulo, and it was Andretti’s Jake Dennis who went quickest ahead of qualifying in Brazil for Round 1 of Season 11.

Jake Dennis set the pace in the final Free Practice session in his Andretti, clocking in 1m09.617s – the fastest time of the weekend. It was a clean but close 40 minute session, with the top 17 cars all separated by less than a second, as Formula E welcomes in the rapid new GEN3 Evo era.

TAG Heuer Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa finished the session in second, with Nissan’s Oliver Rowland in third. Pascal Wehrlein made it three-Porsche powertrains in the top four, with Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans completing the top five.

It was a clean first half of the session, with all of the grid heading out and getting laps in as they made the most of the final practice session before qualifying.

Reigning World Champion Wehrlein was the first driver of the weekend to reach the 1m09s, as he laid down a 1m09.884s benchmark. However, it wasn’t long before his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa made it a Porsche one-two as he went two-tenths quicker to top the time sheets.

With 10 minutes of the session left, yesterday’s fastest man on track, Nissan’s Oliver Rowland, split the Porsches to go in second.

Nick Cassidy had a moment with the NEOM McLaren of Taylor Barnard, with the two going almost wheel-to-wheel into Turn 1 with six minutes left on the clock. In the end, it was Cassidy who had to run wide and rejoin the track.

Barnard’s McLaren teammate, Sam Bird, also had a big lock-up as he started one of his final flying laps. The Brit later radioed that he had a problem with the front-right of his GEN3 Evo, the same palace where he had the issues before, explaining that something internally was “getting noisier and noisier” with his car. He was able to make it back to the garage, but not ideal with qualifying just a few hours away.

As the session came to an end, Jake Dennis popped in a quick lap to go top and would stay there at the chequered flag. Mitch Evans looked like he could challenge Dennis for the first place slot, going purple in the first sector of his final flying lap, but would encounter traffic and be forced to settle for fifth at the line.

Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns and Sebastien Buemi finished the session in sixth and seventh, with Nico Mueller finishing eighth and having a better session for Andretti after he made contact with the wall during FP1 yesterday.

Maximilian Guenther came home in ninth for his new team DS PENSKE, with CUPRA KIRO’s Dan Ticktum completing the top 10.
