SEASON 10 REVIEW: Tokyo, Misano and Monaco

Look back over a sensational Season 10, as we reach the midpoint of the campaign in this throwback series.

In the final year of the GEN3 machine, we experienced some unforgettable moments. From last-lap overtakes for the win, dominant displays and a tense championship battle that went down to the final race, relive all the drama with our look back over Season 10.

Formula E Championship Journalist Katy Fairman shares the biggest stories from our first visit to Japan, the madness that unfolded in Misano and a magical 'happy ever after' for Mitch Evans in Monaco.

30 March: 2024 Tokyo E-Prix Round 5

Pole: Oliver Rowland

Winner: Maximilian Guenther

The trend of five different winners in as many rounds continued into Tokyo, when Maserati MSG Racing’s Maximilian Guenther emerged victorious. Formula E’s first race in Japan attracted plenty of fans and famous faces, such as racing royalty Yuki Tsunoda and Takuma Sato plus Fast & Furious star Sung Kang.

HISTORY: Looking back through Formula E's key moments

Oliver Rowland claimed the Julius Baer Pole Position at Nissan’s home event, but settled for second in the race. Despite leading for the majority of the E-Prix, Rowland let Guenther take first place when energy levels became critical as the race drew towards its close.

TAG Heuer Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa then tried a move on Rowland for second, desperate for a big result after a challenging start to the season, however wasn’t able to make it stick and finished fourth. Rowland also did his best to snatch the win back from Guenther on the last lap but with no success, with Andretti’s Jake Dennis snapping up third place.

Jaguar TCS Racing and Mitch Evans also celebrated their 100th Formula E races, yet the Kiwi picked up severe front wing damage and finished 15th. On the other side of the garage, Nick Cassidy started 19th but climbed up to eighth.

  3. Oliver Rowland – 54 points

13 April: 2024 Misano E-Prix Round 6

Pole: Mitch Evans

Winner: Oliver Rowland

Misano provided us with chaos from the word go, but reached another level when race winner Antonio Felix da Costa was disqualified for a technical infraction. The win was instead given to Oliver Rowland, which marked his second-ever victory in Formula E and saw him lead the Drivers’ World Championship.

Evans bounced back from Tokyo to start on pole, yet this wide circuit and close racing meant he didn’t stay there for too long. As cars went three wide, accidents started to occur with both championship contenders - Cassidy and Pascal Wehrlein - receiving front wing damage.

FEATURE: Which major manufacturers have been part of Formula E?

With just two laps to go, it was clear this was a battle between da Costa and Rowland for the victory – marking six new winners over the first six rounds of Season 10. It was the Porsche pilot who reached the finish line first, silencing any doubters after a turbulent few races. However, after all the celebrations were complete, it was revealed the FIA had found the throttle damper spring on da Costa’s car was not in conformity with one of three optional declared items and he was disqualified as a result. Rowland and Nissan were the winners, with Dennis second and Guenther promoted into third.

ERT’s Dan Ticktum finished in fourth, his best result in the championship to date.

14 April: 2024 Misano E-Prix Round 7

Pole: Jake Hughes

Winner: Pascal Wehrlein

In a dramatic twist on the final lap in Misano, Wehrlein became our first double winner of Season 10. The Porsche driver had been almost a second and a half behind leader Rowland as they started the last lap, but a software blip saw the Nissan driver run out of energy in shocking scenes.

It was another manic race, with hundreds of overtakes and pieces of carbon fibre flying everywhere, with NEOM McLaren’s Jake Hughes starting from pole. Plenty of side-by-side racing resulted in punctures and trips to the gravel, but Rowland and Wehrlein kept themselves out of trouble ahead as the race progressed.

There was a momentary stoppage for Evans, as teammate Cassidy climbed the pack and found himself fighting ABT CUPRA’s Nico Mueller for the final podium slot after Rowland’s retirement and Dennis now sat in second. Despite Mueller’s best efforts, he couldn’t keep the Jaguar back and missed out on third place by just 0.050s at the line.

NEWS: Andretti signs Mueller for Season 11 of Formula E

"It sounds like something was missed on the grid,” Rowland explained. “When I crossed the line at the start it counted down a lap, which it shouldn't. So, I had one less lap the whole race.”

27 April: 2024 Monaco E-Prix Round 8

Pole: Pascal Wehrlein

Winner: Mitch Evans

There was once again magic in Monaco, as Mitch Evans ended his curse of never standing on the top of the podium in the principality. Despite finishing in the top three in the last three races in Monte Carlo, Evans finally found himself first and secured Jaguar’s maiden Monaco E-Prix win. It was a superstar strategy from the British team, who managed a one-two result with team player Cassidy in second.

Behind them the DS PENSKE duo of Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne had a great result in their limited edition liveries. Vandoorne finished the race in third, with JEV fourth, and Stoff picked up his first Formula E trophy since he won the Season 8 Drivers’ World Championship back in 2022.

However, one of the biggest stories from race day came from NEOM McLaren as Sam Bird broke his hand in an incident during the first Free Practice - promoting rookie talent Taylor Barnard. Aged 19 years and 331 days, Barnard became the youngest Formula E driver in the championship’s 10 year history and the first teenager to start a race. Although he started at the back of the pack, he kept his McLaren out of trouble and finished in a very respectable 14th.

Pascal Wehrlein also started from pole position, banking himself another three points for the achievement, but dropped down during the race to finish fifth.
