Huge names in motorsport and manufacturing have always gravitated to Formula E for a host of reasons. Of course, the incredible racing spectacle and host of brilliant calendar locations come to mind, but a lot of them use the championship as a test bed for their road car technologies – making it a laboratory for the future of electric mobility.

Here are some of the big names that have made up the DNA of this all-electric championship over the past 12 seasons...and a new name who will enter the championship for the GEN4 era!

Mahindra

One of the first teams to commit to Formula E was Mahindra. The Indian multinational automotive manufacturing corporation is based in Mumbai, and is one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in their home country. Their specialities are automotive, however they also produce farm equipment. During their time in Formula E, they have entered over 150 races, won five E-Prix and stood on the podium an impressive 31 times.

Mahindra Racing has committed to Formula E's GEN4 era as a manufacturer in the championship.

Renault

The first constructor involved in Formula E, Renault knew this was the place to be from the beginning. The iconic French manufacturer lined up on the starting grid for the championship’s first race in 2014, with Nicolas Prost achieving the championship’s first-ever pole position for the e.dams-Renault squad.

During their time in the series, the Renault-affiliated team won the Teams’ Championship over three consecutive seasons. Sebastien Buemi also lifted the Drivers’ Championship with the team’s help during a nail-biting Season 2 campaign. For Season 5, Renault became the Nissan outfit.

HISTORY: Looking back through Formula E's key moments

Audi Sport

Another key player in the championship’s early days: Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler Formula E Team. Fronted by Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi, the team made history on debut as di Grassi became Formula E’s first race winner in Beijing. Over the next few seasons, the team continued to improve and picked up more victories. In Season 3, di Grassi secured the Drivers’ Title with the Audi Sport-supported ABT team, before Audi became the first German car manufacturer to take part in Formula E with a factory team for Season 4. That same season they won the Teams’ Championship.

DS Automobiles

The French manufacturer has celebrated over 100 races in Formula E, and has become synonymous with black and gold - however, it's not always been associated with that team. Joining Formula E in Season 2 with the Virgin Racing team, several drivers have represented DS over the years including champions Jean-Eric Vergne, Antonio Felix da Costa and Stoffel Vandoorne.

In Season 9, they teamed up with Team Penske, one of the most successful organisations in the world of motorsport.

Jaguar

The luxury car manufacturer made a big motorsport comeback when it entered Formula E during Season 3. The championship has offered the British team a unique chance for Jaguar Land Rover to develop their EV technology for their road cars. Having hit over 100 race entries, Jaguar TCS Racing have picked up 25 wins from their time in the championship, and have committed to the exciting GEN4 era.

Season 12 saw a new line-up and new leadership at Jaguar as former McLaren team principal Ian James joined the outfit, bringing with him a collection of drivers' and teams' titles in Formula E.

NIO

NIO, formerly known as China Racing, was the second team to announce its involvement in Formula E. They won the inaugural Drivers’ Championship with Nelson Piquet Jr, before being rebranded as NIO as part of the NEXTEV team in Season 3. The Chinese multinational automobile manufacturer specialises in electric vehicles and remained a key part of the championship until the end of Season 9 when it rebranded to ERT Formula E Team. During its time under the NIO brand, the team achieved two pole positions and a podium finish in Mexico.

BMW

Another German giant made their mark in Formula E, when BMW partnered with Andretti Autosport in Season 5. The manufacturer had been involved with the all-electric championship since the beginning, supplying the BMW i8 safety car and i3 medical and course cars.

The team also had great success when it was BMW i Andretti Motorsport, winning seven races over three seasons. Andretti has continued to in the championship, and crowned Jake Dennis the Drivers’ World Champion in Season 9.

Nissan

Renault passed the baton to Nissan fin Season 5. They became the first Japanese automotive brand to line-up on the Formula E grid, partnering with e.Dams until Season 9 when they became their own entity.

For the GEN3 Evo era, Nissan romped to the Drivers' title with Rowland taking an impressive four wins and stepping onto the podium a total of seven. The Brit's pace over one lap saw him break through to the Duels for nine races, and take pole on three occasions. Since Nissan joined the all-electric championship, they’ve won eight races and achieved 31 podiums.

They also confirmed their long-term loyalty to Formula E, as the first team to announce their commitment to the GEN4 era.

Mercedes

The Mercedes name made its way to Formula E officially in Season 6. They had kept an ear close to the ground the year prior, with their affiliates at HWA before officially entering as a manufacturer. The Silver Arrows experienced their first race at the 2019 Diriyah E-Prix where Stoffel Vandoorne achieved a podium on debut, with the Belgian star taking the team to winning ways at the end of the season.

For Seasons 7 and 8, Mercedes got stronger and won the Teams’ Championship over two consecutive years as well as crowning both their drivers, Nyck de Vries and Vandoorne, World Champions, respectively. When Mercedes decided to exit the championship, much of their operation moved across to what would become the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.

Porsche

Season 6 also welcomed Porsche to the Formula E roster, meaning that the ‘big four’ of German manufacturers - Porsche, Mercedes, Audi and BMW, were all on the grid - an incredible achievement for the all-electric championship.

Over their 96 race entries, they have won 14 races and stood on the podium 36 times. In Season 10, Porsche continued with Wehrlein and da Costa, the pair putting together a championship run. Wehrlein romped to the top of the standings, the German taking three victories, with the last coming in the London season-finale, capitalising on a pair of podiums to take the Season 10 Drivers' title.

In Season 11, the German squad delivered further championships to Porsche in Stuttgart, with success and a clean sweep across the Teams' and Manufacturers' titles.

Maserati

Upon the arrival of GEN3, Formula E’s fastest, lightest and most efficient car yet, Maserati became the latest historic manufacturer to join the championship. The landmark moment saw the Maserati name back in single seater motorsport for the first time in more than 60 years, partnering with the MSG group. Maximilian Guenther achieved a win for the squad in their first year, becoming the first driver since the late great Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957 to be victorious for Maserati in single seaters. Over the course of their time in Formula E, the squad would achieve three victories in the all-electric championship.

CUPRA

CUPRA Racing made its debut in Season 9, linking up with ABT Sportsline. In their first year, the team managed to lock out the front-row for the Berlin E-Prix Round 8 - their most successful Formula E moment as a partnership.

For Season 11, CUPRA teamed up with KIRO, turning heads as Dan Ticktum took the team back to the top step of podium. The team were also taken over by new American owners, along with actor Idris Elba, which injected some renewed energy into the outfit, and with a title-winning Porsche power at their disposal, they've quickly become dark horses in the paddock.

McLaren

The famous papaya team also arrived on the grid for GEN3, taking over the Mercedes team. In their first year of Formula E, NEOM McLaren not only secured two pole positions, but found themselves on the podium in Diriyah. McLaren Racing celebrated their 60th anniversary during Season 9, and managed their first Formula E win thanks to Sam Bird in Season 10 Sáo Paulo E-Prix.

Season 10 also saw the Papaya-squad make history by fielding the youngest-ever Formula E driver, Taylor Barnard, who filled in for the injured Bird during the Monaco E-Prix. At the time, Barnard was 19 years, 332 days, making him the only teenager ever to take part in an official Formula E race. Just two races later the young Brit would add another record to his name by becoming the youngest points scorer in Formula E history.

Citroën

French automotive giant Citroën announced ahead of Season 12 that it would join Formula E ahead of the 2025/26 season, and the squad has already made a lasting first impression with their competitive performance over the opening six rounds.

Nick Cassidy picked up a podium in Citroën Racing's first race during the season opener in São Paulo, followed by a win in just their second race in the championship back in Mexico City. In Madrid, Round 6 of the 2025/26 season, he ticked another box, after securing the Julius Baer Pole Position.

Ahead of the 2026 CUPRA Raval Madrid E-Prix, Citroën Racing confirmed their commitment to Formula E's GEN4 era.

Opel

Opel has announced its entry into the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for Season 13 (2026/27) - the beginning of the GEN4 era.

Named the ‘Opel GSE Formula E Team,’ the German organisation is taking its commitment to electric motorsport to the next level, while showcasing its all-electric GSE models. The news was officially announced at a press conference ahead of the inaugural Madrid E-Prix.

In addition to the above, there have also been other huge additions to the championship that shape it into the high-respected and loved racing series that it is today. Names like ABT Schaeffler, Andretti Technologies, Penske and Venturi are just some of the other groups that created Formula E into what it is today.
