The Swiss driver, who is no stranger to the Tempelhof circuit having started 16 races here over his Formula E career, managed his second pole of the season, having qualified first earlier this year in Diriyah. By lining up on the first place grid slot, Buemi also brings an end to the record of having nine different polesitters in the last nine races.
Speaking about his impressive achievement, the Envision driver said he was “a bit surprised to be on pole” after making several mistakes on his final qualifying lap in the Berlin sun.
“It's true that the lap was not great,” Buemi continued. “I made a couple of mistakes in Turns 9 and 10, the last two corners.
“I braked too late, that was why I was a bit surprised because that corner was bad and the next one wasn’t great either. I was too conservative.”
As well as the injury to his hand and recovering from that, Buemi has also had a very busy week. He welcomed a son four days ago with his partner, as well as winning last weekend in the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Portimao.
“After this week, and with what happened in São Paulo with my hand it's very special. It's been a tough couple of weeks with the hand and not knowing when the baby would arrive but it's turned out great!”
Buemi has won from pole once in the last six years, which was for the New York E-Prix in Season 5 and still remains his last Formula E victory. Although none of the last nine pole sitters have won their respective races, Buemi will be hoping to break this ahead of the first race of the double header weekend.
