Free Practice 1: Standings leader Mortara sets the pace in Rome

Free Practice 1: Standings leader Mortara sets the pace in Rome

Standings leader and ROKiT Venturi Racing driver Edoardo Mortara led the way in the first session of the day in Rome with a time of 1m40.022s, while Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans came close behind in second, followed by reigning champ and Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team's Nyck de Vries third fastest in Free Practice 1.

The top seven cars were all within a second of each other as track action got underway on the infamous Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR street circuit in Rome. All 22 cars made it out in the first morning session, while Envision Racing's Nick Cassidy spent time in the pits after completing only two laps with suspected driveshaft issues. The British driver made it out towards the end to complete six laps and finish 19th fastest.

With cool morning temperatures impacting braking, a lockup for Avalanche Andretti's Jake Dennis saw the Brit avoid a narrow miss through the chicane. With more undulation than any other track on the Formula E calendar, the bumps on the fast uphill section caught Mahindra's Oliver Rowland out after he saved a narrow miss with the wall on the way up to Turn 7.

With seconds to go, Rowland suffered damage when contact with DS TECHEETAH's Jean-Eric Vergne sent him into the wall on the chicane through Turns 12 and 13. Still moving, Rowland hastily returned to the pits to repair his car ahead of Free Practice 2.
