Lucid Air to feature at 2023 CORE Diriyah E-Prix

American electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid is supplying a fleet of cars to support the 2023 CORE Diriyah E-Prix, with its luxury saloon – the Lucid Air – in place as course cars for the Saudi Arabian double-header.

The Airs are also set to give celebrities, journalists, guests and influencers a taste of EV performance, with some Electric Laps around the Diriyah Street Circuit over the course of the weekend.

“I am very excited for Formula E’s global audience to witness a fleet of our award-winning Lucid Air road cars on the Diriyah Street Circuit this weekend, as course cars and as part of the Formula E Electric Laps program,” said Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson.

“Formula E is the world’s preeminent electric vehicle racing series, so it is only appropriate that the world’s most efficient and powerful electric sedan, the Lucid Air, shares the track with the race cars.

“We develop our powertrain and battery technology fully in-house and have a history of supplying systems for electric racing applications. For Lucid, the transfer of technology between motorsport and road cars is a two-way symbiosis, and we are proud to work with the Formula E as we demonstrate to the world what is possible through vehicle electrification.”

The current top-of-the-range Grand Touring Performance model, which starts at $138,000, will hit 60mph (100kph) between 2.6-3.0 seconds and a top speed of 168mph (270kph) using a dual motor, 1,050bhp (783kW) setup. The Air can travel further than any other EV currently on the market, coming in at an EPA-estimated range of up to 516 miles (830km) from its 112kWh battery pack, which also supports 900-volt, 300kW DC fast-charging and can add up to 200 miles of range in just 12 minutes.

The upcoming Air Sapphire is set to go even quicker – reaching 60mph in less than two seconds and a top speed exceeding 200mph (320kph) thanks to triple motors and a total power output of more than 1,200hp (895kw).

Inside, the Air can be fitted with a 21-speaker sound system, while the Glass Cockpit, 34-inch 5k display sweeps around the driver across the dash. Alexa, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all supported – as are regular OTA updates – along with features like facial recognition, there to tailor the driver’s experience with personalised preferences.

Lucid’s Air Pure and Touring complete the soon to be four-model line-up, starting at $87,400.
