Formula E GEN4 car achieves nail-biting second-place finish in Goodwood shootout

Formula E made a historic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed by entering its next-generation GEN4 development car into the legendary Goodwood Shootout.

Despite still being in development, more than five months away from its competitive debut and designed for wheel-to-wheel circuit racing rather than hill climbs, the all-electric prototype delivered one of the most remarkable performances in the event’s history.

Driven by CUPRA KIRO Formula E driver and Goodwood rookie Dan Ticktum, the GEN4 development car took on four-time Goodwood Shootout winner and reigning Pikes Peak champion Romain Dumas in a captivating battle that showcased the extraordinary performance potential of Formula E’s next generation.

Ticktum ultimately secured a stunning second-place finish, missing victory by just 0.48 seconds. His time of 42.06 seconds ranks as the fifth-fastest Shootout run in Goodwood Festival of Speed history and would have won 23 of the previous 25 Shootouts, underlining the extraordinary achievement of a development car making its first competitive appearance.

Jeff Dodds, Chief Executive Officer, Formula E, said: “We could have waited. Instead, we did what racers do. We brought a development car to one of the world’s greatest motorsport events and put it to the test.

"To see a car still months away from its race debut, driven by someone competing at Goodwood for the first time, push one of the greatest hill climb drivers in history to within half a second of victory is an extraordinary achievement. Every engineer, manufacturer, partner and member of the Formula E family should be immensely proud of what we’ve achieved this weekend. We’ll be back.”

Dan Ticktum, CUPRA KIRO Formula E driver, said: “For a car that’s designed to race on street circuits rather than attack a hill climb, and with this being my first time at Goodwood, I’m incredibly pleased with what we’ve achieved. The jump from GEN3 to GEN4 is enormous, and I think this weekend has given everyone a glimpse of what’s coming. Hopefully we’ll be back next year and go one better.”

The GEN4 development car will continue its intensive testing programme ahead of its official launch later this year before making its competitive debut at the opening round of the new era of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Jeddah this December.
