Formula E has a brand new polesitter in the form of 26-year-old Andretti driver, Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian driver fended off fierce competition in the form of Taylor Barnard and yesterday's polesitter Pascal Wehrlein to claim Andretti's 16th Formula E pole position.
Final
In the fight for pole, there was nothing that Barnard could do to defeat Drugovich, who claimed a maiden pole position by a margin of nearly half a second.
Semi Finals
The first Semi Final saw two Brits go head-to-head in the form of Oliver Rowland and Taylor Barnard, the pair having last met in the Duel stages in Monaco last season. Barnard built out a significant margin over the Nissan driver by the second sector, comfortably advancing to the Final.
In the battle of the Porsche powered cars of Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) and Felipe Drugovich (Andretti), Semi Final 2 went the way of Felipe Drugovich - a major upset for the manufacturer team.
Quarter Finals
The two youngest drivers on the grid, Pepe Marti and Taylor Barnard, went head-to-head in the first Quarter Final, with Marti already guaranteed his highest starting position (previously 10th). Barnard would be the one to progress, beating Marti’s lap time by over half a second.
Rowland and Muller were up next, with Rowland the one to advance, after finding the emerging dry line around the track.
The penultimate Quarter Final saw Drugovich go up against Nato, with the former finding an early advantage after a strong first sector. The Brazilian was able to maintain this advantage throughout the remainder of the lap, securing his spot in the Semi Finals.
Finally, it was the turn of two championship frontrunners, Edoardo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein. The Porsche driver was in imperious form, creating a gap of over seven tenths in the first sector alone - which he extended to over a second by the time he crossed the line.
Group A
Qualifying for the Shanghai E-Prix, Round 13, kicked off with Group A, featuring championship leader, Mitch Evans.
Nico Muller topped the group with a 1m16.615, ahead of DS PENSKE’s Taylor Barnard, who continued his strong pace in the wet from Free Practice 3. Pepe Marti also made it through to the Duels for the very first time, with reigning champion, Oliver Rowland taking the final spot.
By far the biggest shock from Group A was the elimination of both Jaguar drivers, putting Evans and teammate Antonio Felix da Costa on the backfoot for the E-Prix, in a day which could prove critical in the championship fight.
Group B
In Group B, yesterday’s polesitter and race winner, Pascal Wehrlein, continued his strong showing with the fastest time of the Groups with a 1m16.030.
Norman Nato and Felipe Drugovich also made it through, but Drugovich’s Andretti teammate Jake Dennis did not advance, the Brit reporting on the radio that he was blocked by Envision Racing’s Sebastien Buemi.
Edoardo Mortara was the final driver to advance, denying Zane Maloney a spot in the Duels.
