QUALI REPORT: Wehrlein claims 12th career pole in Shanghai

Here's what happened in qualifying for Round 12 of the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Shanghai.

In a critical weekend for the championship battle, it was Pascal Wehrlein who took the three valuable points for pole position, fending off current championship leader Mitch Evans in the Final.

As a result, Wehrlein leapfrogs Mortara in the drivers' standings to go third, 24 points off the lead. But with rain potentially on the radar, anything can happen in the E-Prix.

Final

In the fight for pole between two championship frontrunners, both put together a strong lap, but it was Wehrlein who came out on top with a brilliant 1m09.260, two tenths ahead of Dennis.

Semi Finals

The first Semi Final was a real battle of the Titans with Dennis and Evans going head-to-head. Either way, Dennis was guaranteed his best-ever Shanghai start, his previous best being 6th. And despite setting the quickest time of the day when he crossed the line, Dennis was no match for Evans, who bested him by over a tenth to make it through to the Final.

The second Semi Final was an all-German affair between Gunther and Wehrlein, with Wehrlein comfortably claiming his place in the Final.

Quarter Finals

First up, two former champions, Sebastien Buemi and Jake Dennis, went head-to-head. After a close battle throughout the lap, Dennis nailed the final sector and claimed his spot in the Semi Finals by +0.237.

Mitch Evans and Jean-Eric Vergne were up next, making Evans’ 40th appearance in the duel stages. And for the championship leader it would be an easy victory, sailing through by over three tenths.

In the penultimate showdown it was the turn of Max Gunther and Antonio Felix da Costa. Neither driver had a completely clean lap, with both making errors as they tested the limits of the Shanghai International Circuit. However, despite losing time early in the lap, Max Gunther was able to keep his cool and secure his spot in the Semi Finals.

Finally, it was the turn of Dan Ticktum and Pascal Wehrlein, two of the strongest qualifiers this season. Yet despite his best efforts, Ticktum was no match for the Season 10 champion who claimed the final spot in the Semi Finals.

Group A

It was a good start to qualifying for championship leader Mitch Evans, who sailed through to the Duels stages with a 1m10.175, 0.050 ahead of Season 9 Formula E champion, Jake Dennis (Andretti).

The pair were joined in the Duels by two more former champions, Envision Racing’s Sebastien Buemi and Citroen Racing’s Jean-Eric Vergne.

Two significant names who missed out on advancing were Nico Muller (Porsche) and Edoardo Mortara (Mahindra Racing), the former making his frustration apparent on the team radio.

Group B

Group B was a happier affair for Porsche, with Pascal Wehrlein topping the group with a 1m10.125, ahead of former teammate Antonio Felix da Costa (Jaguar TCS Racing). Max Gunther (DS PENSKE) and Dan Ticktum (CUPRA KIRO) joined the pair in making it through to the Duels.

Reigning champion Oliver Rowland failed to make it through, finishing the session in seventh.
