Ticktum and Maloney to serve grid penalties in Shanghai

Here's why CUPRA KIRO's Dan Ticktum and Lola Yamaha ABT's Zane Maloney will both carry grid penalties heading into the Shanghai E-Prix weekend.

As Formula E looks ahead to Rounds 12 & 13 of the 2025/26 championship in Shanghai, two drivers enter the weekend with grid penalties - a result of incidents at the 2026 Lianxin Sanya E-Prix.

PREVIEW: Shanghai returns for Rounds 12 and 13 of 2025/26 season

Lola Yamaha ABT's Zane Maloney enters the weekend with a staggering 43 place grid penalty, as a result of the team changing the Barbadian's inverters (MCU) and gearbox during the Sanya weekend. As these items were changed post-qualifying, the accumulated 40 place grid drop is applied to the following race - Round 12 in Shanghai.

Maloney was awarded a further 3 place grid drop following the Lianxin Sanya E-Prix, after Stewards determined that 'driver of car 22 was reported speeding under Red Flag'. The Lola Yamaha ABT was himself involved in the incident that led to the Red Flag, and upon recovering and attempting to return to the pit lane, did 'not immediately reduce speed to 50km/h'.

With such a significant grid drop - that would be impossible for Maloney to complete with only 20 cars on the grid - he will additionally be forced to serve a 10 second stop-go penalty at the start of the Shanghai E-Prix.

Another driver who fell foul of Red Flag rules was CUPRA KIRO's Dan Ticktum. The Brit, who like Maloney had been involved in the Red Flag incident, failed to 'reduce his speed to 50 km/h after rejoining from the incident scene. Instead, the car only reduced its speed to 50 km/h after approximately 14 seconds.'

Ticktum will therefore also have a three place grid drop for Round 12 in Shanghai this weekend.
