REPORT: Citroën Racing take first Formula E pole thanks to Cassidy in Madrid

Nick Cassidy secured Julius Baer Pole Position for Citroën Racing, their first in the all-electric championship, at the 2026 CUPRA Raval Madrid E-Prix.

Citroën Racing and Nick Cassidy achieved their first Julius Baer Pole Position together, with the Kiwi managing to achieve his eighth pole in Formula E. It was a close battle at the end, as Cassidy took on Season 7 World Champion Nyck de Vries (Mahindra), and the three points for pole leapfrogs Cassidy above Oliver Rowland (Nissan) and into third in the Drivers’ Championship.

Cassidy won his last start from pole, which was in the wet around Shanghai last year.

Final

Nick Cassidy took on Nyck de Vries in the final battle, but it was Cassidy who achieved his first pole position for Citroën.

Semi Finals

Two champions went up against each other, as Antonio Felix da Costa battled Nyck de Vries but there could only be one winner and it was the Mahindra driver by four tenths of a second.

It was then Norman Nato versus Nick Cassidy, but a mistake from Norman saw him run wide into the gravel and handed victory to the Citroën Racing pilot.

Quarter Finals

First up was former teammates Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa, but an early mistake from Season 10 Champion Wehrlein meant he spent the rest of his lap trying to recover time but finished 4.4s behind. Da Costa progressed into the Semi Finals.

Then it was Oliver Rowland for Nissan against Nyck de Vries, but a mistake for reigning champ Rowland saw him have a spin and lost a lot of time. The Mahindra driver, who brought out red flags for a crash earlier in the weekend, has looked at home here apart from the mistake in FP1.

Nick Cassidy beat Edoardo Mortara next, ending any hopes of three consecutive pole positions for Mortara. He’s been rapid this week with Citroën Racing, and will be looking for another victory after winning earlier this season in Mexico City.

The final Quarter Final was Maximilian Guenther and Norman Nato, but like others before him Guenther found himself going through the gravel after these damp conditions made things tricky. Norman Nato and Nissan secured the last spot in the Semis as a result.

Groups

Group A

Nyck de Vries continued his strong run of form in Jarama, topping the first of the two groups. He was joined in the next stage of qualifying by Da Costa, who got the best second and third sector times, as well as Pascal Wehrlein and Oliver Rowland.

Home hero Pepe Martí managed sixth for CUPRA KIRO, with FP2’s quickest man Felipe Drugovich having a tough session to finish 10th and will start at the back of the grid.

Group B

Norman Nato was best of the rest for Nissan, with Edoardo Mortara and Mahindra Racing second. Nick Cassidy got his Citroën Racing into third, with Maximilian Guenther taking the final spot in the Duels for DS PENSKE.
