ABB Engineered to Outrun set to reward perfected strategies and overtaking heroics in Season 11

Championship Title Partner ABB will recognise the driver and engineer combo that successfully make up the most positions in the race at each round in 2024/25. A race-by-race leaderboard and winner will culminate in the form of the Season 11-long ABB Engineered to Outrun Award.

The ABB Engineered to Outrun Award recognises the driver and engineer combination who successfully make up the most positions over a race using their overtaking skill, energy efficiency and pace.

The award brings attention to the talented driving on display during a Formula E race, and rewards the driver who has gained the most positions by the chequered flag. A league table recording the positions gained by every driver will be revealed immediately after each race, alongside in-depth data and analysis to illustrate how the encounter, and the battle for the award, unfolded.

In the GEN3 era the two drivers that topped the charts for positions gained were Season 3 champion Lucas di Grassi and Oliver Rowland.

Overtaking heroes

Lucas di Grassi, then with Mahindra Racing, secured the most moves through the pack in Season 9, topping the table right at the last - at the season finale in London. The former Formula E champion navigated a brilliant drive to gain 14 spots from his starting position, and make it into the top 10 by the end of the race.

In Season 10, Nissan's Oliver Rowland set the pace with an incredible 64 positions gained during his 2023/24 campaign. King of making a move stick, Rowland clinched the award on home soil after a fantastic final race in London. Despite having never scored a point in the British capital, Rowland climbed from ninth on the grid to stand on the top step of the podium with the victory.

How is the award won?

Energy recuperation and the balance between flat out raw pace and usable energy available is the cornerstone of strategy in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. It's all about choosing moments and knowing when to push, and getting that balance right over an E-Prix.

"Energy conservation is everything in Formula E," says Maximilian Guenther (DS PENSKE). Nailing the trade-off between managing the finite amount of energy at their disposal and going flat out is the perennial battle for drivers and engineers over the course of any Formula E race.

Making the most of usable energy available over a race distance is often the difference between silverware and coming home empty handed.

In Formula E, drivers start each race with finite usable energy and they'll aim to use every last jolt of juice - leaving nothing on the table at the chequered flag.

The more a driver pushes the accelerator, the greater the drain on their usable energy. If they flew flat out for the full race distance, they'd over-consume and get slapped with a penalty. If a driver does get it wrong and goes over that limit, a 2kWh buffer allows them to safely make their way back to the pits.

Knowing when to pounce and when to conserve is absolutely key for any driver looking to make the points. It's all about strategy, and intelligently selecting the right time to make the jump.
