Vergne takes Julius Baer Pole Position...backwards

TECHEETAH's Jean-Eric Vergne managed to set a time of 1:03.568 despite crossing the line backwards. "I'm pretty proud of it," said Vergne with a smile on returning to the pits.

Having had only six days of testing, the Chinese customer team will be in pole position for the first round of the double-header here in Hong Kong.

Starting in second place will be Virgin DS Racing driver Sam Bird, who logged a time of 1:03.595. Both Mahindra drivers made it through to Super Pole with Nick Heidfeld starting in third place while last season's most successful Rookie - Felix Rosenqvist - will start in fifth.

Reigning champion and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler driver will start in sixth place - just falling short of the Super Pole shoot-out - while his teammate Daniel Abt will start two places above in fourth.

Bringing out the red flag was the work of Renault e.dams driver Nico Prost after kissed the barrier exiting Turn 5, damaging his car and spoiling Dragon driver Jerome D'Ambrosio's lap. "I think I was pretty far in my lap at that point, so it was not ideal," said D'Ambrosio.

Last year's poleman and Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver Nelson Piquet Jn locked up, setting him back considerably. "I was a little too aggressive in places, admitted Panasonic Jaguar Racing's Nelson Piquet Jn.
