Sportscar legend stands in for Dario Franchitti at BMW i Berlin ePrix

Allan McNish joins Formula E commentary team

Le Mans winner and former WEC champion Allan McNish will join Jack Nicholls in the world feed commentary box for this weekend’s BMW i Berlin ePrix.

With Dario Franchitti unavailable due to clashing commitments at the Indianapolis 500, McNish – who works as a pundit on BBC radio’s Formula 1 coverage – has been brought in.

“I’ve kept abreast of the series for a few reasons,” he said. “I have a few friends and ex-team-mates in the championship. And the other thing is that it’s a new championship that’s snapped the imagination. I was at Monaco last year and I brought the family along at we sat in the grandstand and did the full fan experience. I’ve been very interested in how the championship has developed.

“With the cars being all electric there are slightly different skills sets with the way you have to manage the energy but in principle it’s just the same as other motorsport. What comes across is how much argy bargy there is and that the drivers aren’t afraid to get their nose stuck in. And you can see when they get out of the cars that they really enjoyed it. Street races bring a different style of driving – you have to adjust your risk balance - and it brings an atmosphere that’s hard to achieve at a normal circuit and I do like that.”

The BMW i Berlin ePrix takes place on May 21, with the race starting at 4pm local time. To find out where to watch the race in your region, click here.
