The man who made the dream of an all-electric racing series a reality had a wish of his own come true this week when he got to drive one of the Spark-Renault SRT_01Es.
The circle of taking the concept to reality was completed as Agag took to the track at the Homestead-Miami Speedway to experience what his creations feel like first hand.
“It’s a fantastic day for me,” said Agag, who did a handful of sighting laps in the Qualcomm Safety Car before, impressing safety car driver Bruno Corriea in the process.
“It’s the first time ever that I’ve driven a single seater and it’s a Formula E – a car that means so much to me and to all of us in the project - this was a dream three years ago, now it’s a reality and I got to drive it. I cannot be happier at this moment – I’m really over the moon.”
It might have been his first time in a single-seater, but that didn’t deter him from testing the limits of the car.
“I didn’t want to break this car as it’s the only one we have but at the end I was pushing,” he admitted. “I kind of lost it a bit and I was thinking ‘if I crash this thing many people are going to be unhappy!’ but then it felt so short. I was doing a few laps and when I had to come in I was really sad, I wanted to continue, but the battery is down so I can’t wait to have another chance to drive again.”
Having driven the unique racer, Agag will now have a greater understanding of the challenges the Formula E drivers are facing. But he doesn’t think a switch to a career behind the wheel lies ahead of him.
“I don’t know if they want to learn from my experience in the car! But everything counts. Having this feeling and knowing how it feels to drive one of these cars makes you understand much better the drivers. But I think they are in a different galaxy – if I had one of our drivers next to me he probably would have lapped me after two laps!”
