QUALIFYING: Nissan's Nato storms to maiden pole in Miami

Nissan's Norman Nato has taken a first Formula E Julius Baer Pole Position for the 2025 Miami E-Prix.

The Frenchman outdid Season 9 World Champion and his old teammate Jake Dennis by 0.129s, as the Brit sought to secure pole for Andretti on home soil for the American team.

Dennis went up against Antonio Felix da Costa for the first spot in the final, but it was the Andetti pilot who put in the better lap despite it being close margins between the two. Then it was the turn of Nato and Robin Frijns, with the Frenchman in the Nissan getting the better lap to make his first Duels since 2021.

Quarters

Jake Dennis was the first driver through to the Semis after going up against the Maserati MSG Racing of Stoffel Vandoorne at the Homestead Miami Speedway. It showed the promise the team has their home race, as they look to secure some silverware at this special event.

Next it was a battle of the Porsche powertrains, as CUPRA KIRO’s David Beckmann took on da Costa at the works team. It was the Season 6 champ who went quickest and would take on Dennis in the semi finals.

Lola Yamaha’s first-ever Duel stage appearance was thanks to Lucas di Grassi, but he wasn’t able to progress any further after being beaten by Nato during their head-to-head. Di Grassi had waited longer than any other driver since his last duel appearance, with it being seven races since Portland.

The final fight was a Dutch-off, with Robin Frijns up against fellow countryman Nyck de Vries. It was Frijns who completed the better lap to fly through to the Semi Finals against Nato.

Group A

There was a big shock during the first group session with championship leader Oliver Rowland forced to finish eighth at the flag, after aborting his final lap after a mistake at Turn 12. He will start in 16th, but was not the result Rowland and Nissan would have wanted.

Da Costa was quickest of his group, with Vandoorne putting in a fantastic last lap to secure second. Jake Dennis got his Andretti into third with David Beckmann delivering a great result for CUPRA KIRO at the home race for their recent investors.

As well as Rowland, Mitch Evans failed to secure a Duels slot and finished seventh.

Group B

More surprises were in store during the second group, with neither Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy, Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein or McLaren’s Taylor Barnard progressing to the next steps of qualifying. Instead, it was Robin Frijns who got a rapid final lap to go top and give Envision their guaranteed best qualifying result of Season 11 so far.

Joining Frijns in the Duels was Lucas di Grassi – a first for Lola Yamaha ABT after their big rebrand. The brilliant lap also placed him ahead of Norman Nato who was the only Nissan-powered car in the next stage of qualifying, and Nyck de Vries to finish in the top four for Mahindra.
