Dennis: 'Season 9 champ will be driver who takes most risk'

Avalanche Andretti’s Jake Dennis enjoyed an incredible day in Portland despite narrowly missing out on victory for the third race in a row. Dennis now leads the Season 9 championship by a single point ahead of Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy after earning the Julius Baer Pole Position and second place in the race.

Dennis defeated NEOM McLaren duo Jake Hughes and Rene Rast in the Duels, before beating Nissan’s Sacha Fenestraz in the final to earn the pole position, his first this season and a home success for the Andretti team. Those three points gained in qualifying proved vital for Dennis, who took the championship lead before the race had even begun.

“Yeah, we had a good day,” said Dennis after the Southwire Portland E-Prix. “I think after the flag I was a little bit disappointed just because of the way the race panned out, it was really really difficult, but nevertheless, we got P2.

“You know, you've got some guys obviously vying for the championship and then other guys, which have nothing to lose. And a race like today, it's all about risk. So, yeah, I just had to keep my powder dry and I knew I could get a good result and come out second.”

The Brit managed to maintain his lead of the championship by finishing second for the third consecutive race, a result achieved following a last lap overtake on Antonio Felix da Costa, and Dennis is already looking ahead to Rome after his eighth podium of the season.

“Well, you know, me and Nick Cassidy are really vying for the championship. And it's just who takes the most risks. And some of those moves on Antonio were brave, and he did a really good job there. Obviously I did Antonio, right on the last lap, which just about got through.

“Now, I'm looking forward to having that race behind me now and we can get back to Rome where it'll be a little more normal and pole will actually be a benefit.”
