Michael Andretti discusses racing on home soil and the championship fight

Michael Andretti has got an important day ahead of him, as his team Avalanche Andretti try to deliver a strong result infront of their home crowd in Portland. With their driver Jake Dennis just one point behind current standings leader Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche), there is the chance he could leave the USA leading the championship.

“We love coming here,” Andretti said at the inaugural Southwire Portland E-Prix. “It's a great part of the country to come and visit. There's a lot of great racing fans up here in this area.”

The Portland International Raceway is a venue that Andretti knows well, saying that he believes his first race was here in 1984. “We'll be coming back again with IndyCar at the end of the year. I always love coming up here. It is just a great event.”

With Andretti being such a powerhouse in motorsport, they have teams across a variety of series. One of those is IndyCar, who also race at this circuit, and Michael confessed they’ve used this to their advantage when it comes to data ahead of the race weekend.

“There's been a lot of talk with the guys about what we do in IndyCar, setting up the cars, things like that. There are some different things that you can do here at the track that are different from other places, so they've been sharing that information.”

For the race, there are high expectations, especially for Dennis who holds the record for the most podiums this season with seven to his name.

“A podium would be huge being here on American soil. We've had some good luck in the past. It would be a big moment, if we can get on the podium.

“Historically, it's still race by race,” Andretti added about the championship fight for his driver Dennis. “In the back of your mind, you're thinking now that every single point is going to be very, very important. We're watching that. And, for us, it's great to be in the battle. Again, we were there a couple of years ago, and hopefully we could finish it off on a positive note.”

Andretti have won in the US before, as Maximilian Guenther took victory for BMW i Andretti Motorsport in New York in 2021.
