Formula E celebrates Earth Day with focus on nature and biodiversity

This year, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and its teams celebrated Earth Day with a focus on investing in the planet, nature and biodiversity through planting.

Earth Day Berlin

In the build-up to the 2023 SABIC Berlin E-Prix double-header, Maserati MSG Racing, Avalanche Andretti Formula E, NIO 333 Racing and Mahindra Racing had their drivers getting their hands dirty, filling planters in raised beds with herbs and flowers as part of Earth Day's 2023 push for furthering biodiversity and awareness through its Canopy Project.

Herbs and flowers attract important pollinators such as bees and insects, help to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, improve the air quality and ultimately balance and enhance the local biosphere. The activation and planters are designed to increase biodiversity and avoids nature loss, improve education and awareness around the importance of local environments and further demonstrate the championship’s commitment to both people and the planet.

The raised beds were on show in the Allianz Fan Village, bringing some colour to a sell-out crowd. After the race weekend, the beds will then be donated to the AWO/IB organisation – a local refugee charity based in Berlin supporting those from Ukraine, Syria, Turkey and more.

One of Earth Day’s other core pillars in 2023 is the sustainability of fashion and clothing, and how making products from more sustainable materials or reusing and recycling clothes can have a huge impact on the natural environment. To play its own part, Formula E donated more than 800 items of race day uniform and merchandise from previous seasons to charities in Berlin that will be reused as ordinary casual clothing. It is estimated that roughly 10% of global carbon emissions are related to the fashion industry, meaning that it is one of the main frontiers that consumers can have a direct and meaningful impact upon.
