Ninth place in the Hong Kong season opener, and the leading rookie driver, was a hint of things to come for Maro Engel over his debut season.
He would only finish twice more in the points – which included a strong fifth place in Monaco – but that owed as much to do with the reliability of his Venturi VM200-FE-02 as it did to his race pace.
There were two Super Pole appearances – in Mexico and Monaco – although a 10-place penalty for a gearbox change at the former prevented him from lining up on the front row after he did an excellent job to set the second fastest flying lap.
And in a nutshell that was the unfortunate story of his season. There were two Visa Fastest Laps as he picked up some consolation for his troubles, while that top-five finish in the team’s home race showed that in the right circumstances Engel is among the many potential race winners in the series.
