Points for De Vries and Driver of the Day in Formula 1 debut
2020/21 Formula E World Champion Nyck de Vries claimed points and Driver of the Day after a stunning debut in Formula 1 during the 2022 Italian Grand Prix with Williams Racing. The drive came after de Vries piloted the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula 1 team car in Friday's Free Practice session, before jumping in to take over racing duties from an unwell Alex Albon at rival team Williams.
Despite having no experience of the FW44 at Monza, the Dutchman and former Mercedes-EQ driver progressed to Q2 – as the fellow Williams driver Nicolas Latifi dropped out – and converted his eighth-place start into a ninth-place finish, scooping two points in the process.
"It was amazing," said de Vries immediately after the race. "The whole experience from yesterday until now has just been a dream. Getting the opportunity to race, starting in the top ten, executing a good race, scoring points in my debut and being Driver of the Day has been amazing."
Delighted with points on his debut drive, de Vries also scooped the coveted Driver of the Day award, getting just short of 28 percent of the vote. Alongside his Mercedes-EQ duties, the Dutchman has been a reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team since 2021.
Maiden DTM win for Envision's Nick Cassidy
After a strong second half of Season 8 in Formula E - sparked off by a win in Round 11 in New York City - Envision Racing's Nick Cassidy added to his win tally with a maiden victory in the German DTM series. Challenging fellow Formula E driver Rene Rast in a wheel-to-wheel battle around Spa Francorchamps, Cassidy also held off the championship-leading BMW of Sheldon van der Linde to clinch his maiden DTM victory at Spa.
“It really is a fantastic feeling and winning in this championship is something that had been on my list for a long time," said Cassidy after the race. "The battle with René was very, very hard and so was the one with Sheldon on cold tyres. And yes, I went all-in, I had nothing to lose," added the the Red Bull Alphatauri AF Corse driver.
Buemi wins World Endurance Car 6 Hours of Fuji
More success for another Formula E Champion came in Japan for all-electric racing stalwart Sebastien Buemi, after the Swiss' Toyota Gazoo Racing squad secured victory in the gruelling 6 Hours of Fuji race. With the team's two cars scooping both first and second, it was Buemi - alongside his teammates Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa - who's Number 8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid cross the line first, making it their second victory since winning their class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier in the year.
Alongside his Formula E duties, Buemi has raced in the World Endurance Car Championship for Toyota since 2012, winning the Championship twice (2014 and 2018-19). In other classes, fellow Formula E driver Robin Frijns (ABT Sportsline) scooped the LMP2 class win in Fuji, while former Jaguar Formula E driver James Calado won the LM GTE Pro class.
