The hot and humid race in Jakarta is one of the most physically challenging events on the calendar, and here is all you need to know ahead of Round 12.
Back racing in Jakarta
After an absence last season, the Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix is back on the calendar! The event, which made its debut in Season 8, has put on three blockbuster races during its time on the calendar and is a favourite among the drivers.

The Jakarta International Circuit is 2.37km long, and was inspired by the 'Kuda Lumping' – a flat horse woven from bamboo and decorated with colourfully painted cloth, which is “ridden” as part of a traditional Javanese dance! The movement leaves the dancers in a trance-like state where they often display feats of strength and physical endurance, something the drivers will need when they take on this special circuit.
A lap of this circuit starts with a long run into a tight opening sector, before tackling a flowing series of turns and banked corners, leading to a tight complex to round out the lap, with a long run down the fast start/finish straight.
Who are the previous winners in Indonesia?
All three winners of the Jakarta race are returning this weekend. Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans was the inaugural winner at this Asian venue, fighting off a tense battle from Jean-Eric Vergne and Edoardo Mortara.
Jakarta became a double-header in Season 9, with Maximilian Guenther putting on a dominant display all weekend. As a result he secured the Julius Baer Pole Position on both occasions, but had to settle for third in the first race. Instead it was Pascal Wehrlein who emerged victorious for TAG Heuer Porsche with Jake Dennis second for Andretti and Guenther third.
However, the following day, Guenther was in charge and converted pole into a win for the Maserati MSG Racing team. Dennis locked in another second place – on his way to the title – with Mitch Evans managing third.
Rowland leads the championship
Despite failing to finish on the podium for both races in Shanghai, Nissan’s Oliver Rowland is still standing proud at the top of the drivers’ World Championship standings with five races to go. He’s been on incredible form all season, and is the undeniable favourite for the title with 171 points to his name ahead of Jakarta.

However, this is Formula E and anything can happen. Reigning World Champion Pascal Wehrlein is behind Rowland on 103 points, and has been very strong in Indonesia in the past, winning here in Season 9.
Keeping cool is key
The heat and humidity that Jakarta delivers is no joke, and drivers and teams will be doing all they can to keep themselves and the cars as cool as possible. Expect to see plenty of dry ice, umbrellas and drivers in ice baths over socials this weekend, as they all try to drop their core temperatures to delay the body getting hot.
Heat can also play a big part in the efficiency of a powertrain, with derating common if it’s under stress. Keeping these GEN3 Evo cars in a good window will be very important, and the same goes for our grid of 22 drivers who will need to stay cool and hydrated over race day.
Straight from Le Mans…
For several drivers on the grid, the past weekend was spent racing at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The brutal 24 hour endurance race is one of the highlights of the motorsport calendar, and plenty of our champions, past and present, were competing.
