While tradition might state that t'is the season to be jolly, for the vast majority of us lucky gift receivers out there, t'is also the season of new tech and electric gadgetry. With more devices making their way into people's pockets this holiday season and only 17 days until the next round of the FIA Formula E Championship in Marrakesh, we've put together the definitive Formula E gaming guide to keep you entertained in the depths of the holiday season.
Real Racing 3
Platform: iOS and Android, Apple TV
Cost: free
First released in 2009, Real Racing 3 is the latest iteration of series so far. Featuring pixel perfect virtual Formula E cars from the likes of reigning champions Renault e.dams and Audi Sport Abt Shaeffler, Real Racing 3 gives players the chance to experience the cars on the Hong Kong E-Prix track through race and time-trial challenges as well as a energy regeneration test, which involves completing a lap using a fixed amount of energy.
rFactor 2
Platform: Windows PC
Cost: from £25.79
Offering the most realistic gameplay is racing simulator rFactor 2. Created by Studio 397, the simulator is widely used by Formula E championship drivers to hone their skills ahead of the race. "Not only does it help to learn tracks, but also to improve concentration and strategy," says Dom Duhan, Chief Digital Officer at Studio 397. With realistic car dynamics, including the option to activate energy regeneration, rFactor 2 is the virtual experience for Formula E's super fans. "Our car build was based on detailed CAD data from Formula E, as well as technical and homologation documentation from Spark," says Durhan. On top of all the action on-track, Formula E's very own EJ can be heard playing a signature tune by the Ferris wheel alongside the sounds of Hong Kong's iconic harbourfront to bring the circuit to life.
Forza Motorsport 6 & 7
Platform: X Box One, X Box OneX and Windows PC
Cost: from £24.99
After Formula E's first feature on Forza Motorsport 6 in 2015, the latest iteration - Forza Motorsport 7 - lets players get behind the wheel of cars from a variety of teams including Mahindra Racing, Panasonic Jaguar Racing, DS Virgin Racing and TECHEETAH to name but a few. As well as being able to drive the cars on non-Formula E tracks, Forza also features a shortened version of the Long Beach E-Prix track from Season One and Two.
Allianz E-Village Gaming Zone
On the other hand, if you're wanting to get as close to the action as possible, then look no further than Formula E's very own Gaming Zone, located off-track in the Allianz E-Village - Formula E's festival of technology, entertainment and innovation at every E-Prix. Here, you'll find a bespoke version of Real Racing 3, built to run on a steering wheel and pedals, making it the most realistic Formula E driving experience in the (virtual) world. With all players given the chance to set their fastest lap, the four fastest fans of the day will have the chance to race against the drivers in the E-Race. Should you prove successful - like E-Race champ Kobi did in Hong Kong (see him in the video above) - you'll be broadcast live on the Formula E YouTube coverage.
Come and experience it first hand in the Allianz E-Village's Gaming Zone at the 2018 Marrakesh E-Prix. Click here for tickets.
