The special streets of Monte Carlo has been a ‘jewel in the crown’ for countless motorsport championships, and Formula E is no exception. Making its debut on the calendar in Season 1, racing here has only got bigger and better as our all-electric machines have got faster and fiercer.

Back for Season 11, the racing spectacle will become a double-header for the first time in its history. Often labelled by fans as showcasing the best racing all year, Monaco will be ready to steal the show and prove that cars can pass around the principality – an incredible 197 overtakes counted during last year’s E-Prix.
As well as the return of PIT BOOST, here is everything you need to know ahead of the Monaco E-Prix double-header across Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May.
Doing the double in Monaco
Formula E is made for the famed Monaco streets, with action and overtakes in abundance since taking to the full iconic circuit in Season 7. For the first time, Monaco will host back-to-back Formula E racing in the Principality across both Saturday and Sunday.

The championship first raced here in the inaugural season, albeit on a shorter version of the world famous circuit. Looping back on themselves at Sainte Dévote rather than tackling the climb to the casino, the 1.765 km layout still saw the cars battle around the marina and through the challenging swimming pool complex.
This layout was used again in Seasons 3 and 5, before switching to the full length design that we all know and love from Season 7. It was a huge success, with it ranked as one of the best races in the series’ 11 year history. Season 6 champion Antonio Felix Da Costa (TAG Heuer Porsche) claimed victory with an audacious overtake at the exit of the tunnel on the final lap of the race for the win.
The 2021 race saw 28 overtakes between the top six runners alone, with the lead changing six times - including a stunning move at Beau Rivage from Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans on da Costa, before the Portuguese returned the favour on the final lap for the win.
Now back with two race days, it promises to be unmissable action twice over.
PIT BOOST returns in Season 11
Formula E debuted its ultra-fast recharging technology – PIT BOOST – in Jeddah earlier this season, and now it’s back! Transforming in-race strategies and providing teams with a revolutionary recharging technology during the already unmissable races, the reaction to the new addition was loved by drivers, teams and fans alike.
What is PIT BOOST?
PIT BOOST is an innovative and mandatory mid-race feature that sees cars given a 10% energy increase (3.85kWh) through a 30-second, 600kW boost in the pit lane. It will be used during one of the two races across a double-header.
All drivers must stop during the race for this extra energy, however each team is only provided one PIT BOOST rig which prevents them from doing any double-stacking. This will also create plenty of drama and excitement, as each competitor navigates an additional element of race strategy and could potentially alter race outcomes and tactics.
In Jeddah, drivers must take the PIT BOOST when their State of Charge (SoC) is below 60% and above 40% at the moment of the boost. The timing of this could vary from garage to garage depending on the strategy of consumption each driver has during the first phase of the race.
Drivers must serve a minimum pit stop time of 34 seconds, with 30 seconds of that being allocated for the charging itself. This new sporting feature is a huge technological step forward in EV charging, deploying significantly more power than current consumer superchargers.
It is another opportunity for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to push the boundaries of electric mobility and demonstrates the championship’s unique position as a ‘race-to-road’ technology platform.
Will the Jaguar dominance in Monaco continue?
Last season Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans was victorious around the streets of Monte Carlo after years of trying in junior series and Formula E. He had finished on the podium on the past three occasions whilst racing for Jaguar in the all-electric championship, and picked up more silverware during GP2 but the win always escaped him: until last year.
He was joined on the podium by his Jaguar teammate Nick Cassidy, who won the iconic E-Prix in Season 9, giving the team a special 1-2 result. Jaguar powertrains have a perfect success rate around Monte Carlo in this GEN3 era, after Evans win for Jaguar last season and Cassidy taking first place for customer team Envision Racing in Season 9.
However, although Evans started the season off with an outrageous win to go from last to first in São Paulo – making championship history – the team have faced many challenges since then. They currently sit eighth in the Teams’ standings, having scored just 10 points across four rounds since Evans' Brazil win. It’s been a bumpy season for the current Teams’ Champions, but they’ll be hoping their record in the principality will continue.
Rowland leads the Drivers’ World Championship
Nissan’s Oliver Rowland continues his reign at the top of the standings, with two victories in Mexico City and Jeddah this season. The Brit has looked the driver to beat so far this season, despite losing out on a likely victory in São Paulo due to a drive-through penalty for a power overuse which impacted all theNissan-powered cars. He also picked up a single point in Miami, after another penalty this time for ATTACK MODE misuse.
Just behind Rowland, who is on 69 points, is Antonio Felix da Costa followed by his Porsche teammate Pascal Wehrlein. The duo have had a mixed bag of results, with some no or low scoring rounds and other rounds that yielded podiums and victories.
Da Costa has won in Monaco in the past, and will be looking to do the double this weekend to push himself past Rowland in the standings. Nevertheless, Monaco is full of surprises with six different drivers winning here over all seven races; Sebastien Buemi being the only double winner here.
GEN3 Evo is quick… really quick
Formula E’s latest race car, the GEN3 Evo, is the quickest accelerating FIA single-seater and capable of 0-60mph in just 1.82 seconds – 30% faster than a current F1 car. The new reinforced body kit enhances aerodynamics and durability and all-wheel drive is available in key race moments, including qualifying duels, race starts, and ATTACK MODE.
GEN3 EVO: Everything you need to know about Formula E's latest electric car
Reigning World Champion Pascal Wehrlein managed to make it back-to-back Julius Baer Pole Positions in São Paulo during the season-opener in December, starting from the P1 grid slot in both Season 10 and Season 11. However, this season his pole lap came in almost three seconds quicker thanks to the developments behind the GEN3 Evo.
