Rowland doubles up with FP2 benchmark in Diriyah

Rowland doubles up with FP2 benchmark in Diriyah

Mahindra Racing's Oliver Rowland has doubled up with the fastest lap time in practice, following his timesheet-topper in Free Practice 1 yesterday in Diriyah.

Rowland's a new signing at Mahindra for Season 8, but he's rapid over a lap and has wasted no time in showing as much on debut for the team. Sam Bird - twice a winner in Saudi Arabia, including on his first outing with Jaguar TCS Racing last season - finds himself second, just 0.015 seconds back from Rowland's 1m08.957s benchmark. Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) winds up third - making it an all-British top three.

WAYS TO WATCH: Where and how to watch every minute of Season 8

Double champion Antonio Felix da Costa (DS TECHEETAH), Robin Frijns (Envision Racing) and Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) complete the top six.

Rowland's time is just over a second quicker than the times we saw yesterday, with the pace likely to increase further as the track conditions improve and more sand is swept from its surface.

The reigning champions find themselves down the order at the moment, with Stoffel Vandoorne 16th and Drivers' World Champion Nyck de Vries a couple of spots back still. The Dutchman slapped the wall in FP1, compromising his run-time and the team's data collection, so, plenty of work for the German team to do ahead of qualifying.

More than just lap times

Lap times aren't the only focus in practice. Drivers and engineers will be working flat out to understand things like energy management profiles and setup ahead of qualifying and the race later in the day - particularly at the opening race weekend of the season.

SCHEDULE: All the timings for the Diriyah E-Prix

On top of energy management, teams work through everything from their systems, setups, FANBOOST and ATTACK MODE deployments and launches throughout practice to make sure they're on-point when it counts.

So, a clear picture of true pace is usually pretty tricky to come by and there’s plenty of scope for all-change in the new-look qualifyingfor the 2022 Diriyah E-Prix Round 1 at 15:40 with the race itself at 20:00. Before than, catch up with the Diriyah preview.
