Championship leader Oliver Rowland will serve a five-place grid penalty for today’s Berlin E-Prix, after the Nissan driver caused a collision during yesterday’s race. It’s a knock back for the Briton, who could secure the drivers’ World Champion today if he outscores TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein by eight points.
MEDIA PEN: The drivers speak after Berlin Round 13
The decision came about after the Stewards decided he had caused a collision with Maserati MSG Racing’s Stoffel Vandoorne at Turn 7. The Belgian driver eventually finished 12th at the chequered flag, but the crash was enough to break Rowland’s steering and forced him to retire.
“I was trying to make my way past a lapped car, and I just misjudged it on the brakes and hit Stoffel in the middle of the corner,” Rowland explained in the media pen after the race.
As well as the five-place penalty, he was also given another penalty point which takes him up to three in the last 12 months.
After Pascal Wehrlein secured a podium yesterday when he finished second, and with Rowland scoring no points, the Nissan driver needs to secure eight or more points to Wehrlein in order to leave the German capital as the World Champion.
