Jake Hughes heads to Maserati MSG Racing for his third season in Formula E, a new team but the same mission for the British driver.

EARLY YEARS

Born in Birmingham, England, Hughes quickly rose in motorsport after making a late start to his racing career. He made his professional karting debut at the age of 16 in 2010.

After only two years in karts, he stepped up to single-seaters with a handful of races in Formula Renault before a full-time drive in the inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Championship in 2013. Hughes raised the championship trophy in an impressive campaign with four wins and six podiums.

Two seasons across Formula Renault followed with Hughes picking up victories and putting in a consistent title challenge across the multiple series, his best coming in the 2015 Formula Renault 2.0 Alps with second overall.

EXPERIENCE IN SINGLE-SEATERS

From there, he graduated to Formula 3, taking in a variety of drives across FIA Formula 3, GP3 and FIA F3 European Championship, narrowly missing out on the F3 Asia title despite clocking nine victories in every race appearance that he made.

Since 2020, Hughes has participated in the FIA Formula 2 Championship and shared this responsibility with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team's simulator role.

A FORMULA E SUBSTITUTE

The sometime podcaster has experience in Formula E, combining his sim role with Mercedes in F1 as the test and reserve driver for their championship-winning Mercedes-EQ outfit and ROKiT Venturi Racing. Hughes also participated in the 2020 Marrakesh Rookie Test, finishing with the seventh-best time in a highly competitive field, including current race winners and upcoming rivals Nick Cassidy and Norman Nato.

GRADUATING WITH McLAREN

Hughes graduated to a full-time drive with NEOM McLaren Formula E Team as the legendary British racing outfit picked up some homegrown talent for their debut new GEN3 era.

The Brit quickly asserted himself in the series, with an impressive one-lap pace that started with third fastest in qualifying for the opening round in Mexico City, second in the first of the Diriyah double-header events before taking his first pole in the second. His best finish was fifth, taking that on three occasions in his rookie season.

Hughes also became a record-breaker in his rookie season, jumping into the GEN3BETA to set a new Guinness World Record for indoor speed, hitting 218.71kmh (135.9 mph) inside the London ExCeL that hosted the London E-Prix that weekend.

Heading into his second campaign in Formula E, Hughes was mired in the midpack and unable to match his success from his rookie season. That was until the second race in Shanghai, converting pole to finish on the second step of the rostrum.

A NEW CHALLENGE FOR SEASON 11

Hughes is stepping away from the McLaren outfit as he ventures to Maserati MSG Racing alongside Stoffel Vandoorne for Season 11.
