The first timed practice session of the 2018 Mexico City E-Prix saw Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler's Lucas di Grassi smash the former lap record with a time of 1:01.158.
Trimming the former lap record of 1:02.164 - set by NIO Formula E Team's Oliver Turvey - by over a second was the work of the reigning champion (and last years winner) Lucas di Grassi, who could be returning to form after a disastrous first half of the season, largely due to technical issues.
Close behind was Venturi Formula E Team's Edoardo Mortara with a time of 1:01.520. The Swiss driver performed well during his debut in Hong Kong, challenging for the top step of the podium. Could we see something similar here in Mexico City?
In third was Techeetah Formula E's Jean-Eric Vergne, who posted a time of 1:01.630. The Frenchman stole the show in Santiago as well as making history by bringing home the series' first-ever one-two win with his teammate Andre Lotterer.
With half the grid posting faster times than last year's lap record, Formula E continues to demonstrate the pace at which the all-electric technology is developing. With the Gen2 car coming in at the start of Season 5, things can only get better.
