BBC Green Sport

The BBC Green Sport Awards 2025 announced that the seires was among this year’s winners: Hector Pardoe (Athlete of the Year), Héctor Bellerín (Global Champion) and Formula E (Pioneer Award). These awards honour the athletes, organisations, and initiatives that are leading the way in environmental sustainability across the world of sport.

The BBC Green Sport Awards are part of the BBC's commitment to a greener future and are designed to use the power and passion of sport for a positive effect. The awards recognise and celebrate individuals and organisations from across the globe who are actively contributing to a more sustainable future through their sporting profile and practices. The awards offer the chance to tell positive and inspiring stories as well as raise awareness.

On Formula E taking the Pioneer Award, the BBC said: "Formula E continues to lead the charge in sustainable motorsport. Net Zero since its 2014 debut, it was the first sport to have SBTi-validated emissions targets and to join the UN’s Sports for Climate Action Framework.

"Its GEN3 race car is fully recyclable and designed for maximum energy efficiency, while race events aim for zero waste through renewable energy and circular logistics. In 2025, Formula E introduced ‘PIT BOOST’, a groundbreaking 600kW ultra-fast charging strategy that revolutionized race tactics and accelerated public EV charging innovation.

"By combining elite competition with climate leadership, Formula E is pushing the boundaries of electric performance and inspiring change across the automotive industry and global sport."

“We are honoured to receive the BBC Green Sports Award in the Pioneer category," Julia Palle, VP Sustainability Formula E. "Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Formula E — from our races to our community initiatives.

"Achieving Net Zero Pathway certification as the first sport globally to do so is a milestone that reflects our commitment to science-based emissions reduction and sustainable practices. From the FIA Girls on Track program, the Better Futures Fund and pioneering the GEN3 Evo race car, every step we take is guided by our purpose to accelerate sustainable human progress.

"This award is a testament to the collective effort of our teams, partners, and host cities who share our vision of using motorsport as a powerful platform for positive change.”

Driving sustainability and leading in sport

This award recognises Formula E’s long-term commitment to leading the way in sustainability and the positive impact made in driving a more sustainable future for motorsport.

The championship recently became the first sport in the world to achieve Net Zero Pathway certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI) — a globally recognised framework for verifying credible, science-based net zero strategies. This certification is underpinned by a verified carbon footprint and a management system aligned with the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, ensuring that Formula E’s emissions data, reduction plans, and methodologies meet the highest international standards.

Unlike many ‘net zero’ claims that rely primarily on offsets, the BSI Net Zero Pathway independently verifies genuine carbon reduction performance, keeping the Championship ahead of tightening regulatory requirements such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. This guarantees that sponsors, teams, partners, and fans can trust the credibility of Formula E’s climate and sustainability commitments.

From being the only sport with independent Net Zero Pathway certification and the first to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, to initiatives like the FIA Girls on Track program and the Better Futures Fund, Formula E continues to lead by example.

Formula E continues to set the standard as the ultimate proving ground for next-generation electric vehicle technology, pushing the boundaries of performance, efficiency, and innovation as manufacturers leverage advancements developed on the track to create high-performance, energy-efficient vehicles shaping the future of transportation.

Last season, Formula E reached several key sustainability milestones, including:

  • Achieving Net Zero Pathway certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI) — making the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship the first sport globally to earn this recognition,  confirming the series has science-based emissions reduction targets in place that are robust.
  • Introducing the GEN3 Evo race car — the world’s most advanced and efficient electric race car, designed with sustainability embedded across its entire lifecycle, from ethically sourced battery minerals and recyclable cells to the use of natural materials like linen in its chassis construction.
  • Introduction of PIT BOOST, a 30-second stop that provides a 10% energy increase to race cars via a quick, 30-second 600kW boost of energy. PIT BOOST highlights the cutting-edge EV charging technology, demonstrating the huge advances in rapid battery charging, providing a clear example of ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s race to road technology and helping to overcome one of the main barriers to EV adoption - charging speed.
  • Expanding the championship’s Better Futures Fund in Season 11 to support impactful local projects in every race market, with €25,000 donated in each host city to charities driving sustainable progress and lasting community legacy.
  • Launching Driving Force, presented by PIF, Formula E’s global sustainability and STEM education program, which has engaged 60,000 young people worldwide through interactive digital content, hands-on workshops, and live school experiences, empowering the next generation of change makers.
