All eyes were on Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy in Portland, as he could mathematically wrap up the Drivers’ World Championship at a circuit that he dominated at the year before. However, in true Formula E fashion, expect the unexpected.
The race weekend started with the news that Nissan’s Oliver Rowland would miss the Portland double-header. Unable to fly due to an illness, the team drafted in Reserve Driver Caio Collet but it seemed likely that the championship dreams were over for the Yorkshireman.
HISTORY: Looking back through Formula E's key moments
Mitch Evans clinched the Julius Baer Pole Position and found himself in championship contention after his impressive run of results in recent races. However, any chance of a strong result was placed in doubt after he received a five-second penalty for causing a collision early on in the race.
With four laps to go, Cassidy looked comfortable in first and soon pulled a half-a-second gap to Evans in second and TAG Heuer Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa in third. But, in a rare mistake for the standings leader, he slipped wide into Turn 11 on the penultimate lap and found himself on the grass and in a spin before rejoining the pack in 19th position.
It was undoubtedly a defining moment in the title fight, and with Evans’ penalty, it saw da Costa make it three wins in four races. Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns slotted into second, with Jean-Eric Vergne and DS PENSKE in third – a home podium for the team.

30 June: 2024 Hankook Portland E-Prix Round 14

The history books were re-written in Portland, when JEV managed to achieve his 17th pole in Formula E – the most of any driver in the championship’s 10 year history.
Da Costa, keen to ‘do the double’ and win both races of the US double-header, had a great start to lead the pack going into Turn 1. From there, he managed the race to perfection and secured a third consecutive race win, something that hadn't been done in Formula E since da Costa himself at Berlin in Season 6.
Robin Frijns secured back-to-back podiums in Portland with another second place, a great way to celebrate his 100th Formula E race. They were joined on the podium by Mitch Evans, who bounced back after a disappointing result the day before to find himself equal on points in the standings table with Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.

Elsewhere, ABT CUPRA’s Nico Mueller managed a brilliant sixth place and more points after finishing in fifth the day before. However, for championship leader Nick Cassidy, it was another race with no points and meant the battle was going down to London.

20 July: 2024 Hankook London E-Prix Round 15

Winner: Pascal Wehrlein
Mitch Evans scooped his third pole of the season infront of Jaguar’s home crowd, whilst teammate Cassidy was knocked out in the group stages of qualifying and started down in 17th.
No sooner had Round 15 got underway, it was brought under Safety Car conditions. Frijns was sent into the wall by Andretti’s Jake Dennis, who received a penalty for the incident, and later faced collisions with the likes of Vergne and Cassidy.
Up ahead, Wehrlein climbed up the order from third to take the lead from Evans on Lap 22. The two battled in nail-biting scenes as they took their ATTACK MODE but it was Wehrlein who emerged out ahead, with Evans later complaining of energy issues.
Pascal took his third win of the season and promoted himself to the top of the Drivers’ World Championship with one race to go. Evans settled for second, with final championship contender Nick Cassidy coming home seventh in a race of damage limitations. Envision’s Sebastien Buemi completed the podium in third, bringing his children in matching race suits with him for the celebrations!
Mahindra Racing also had a fantastic race, with their first double-points finish of the year when Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara classified in fourth and fifth, respectively.

21 July: 2024 Hankook London E-Prix Round 16

Winner: Oliver Rowland
One final race to decide a champion, and London didn’t disappoint. Nick Cassidy delivered an incredible comeback drive to claim his first pole of the season, closing the gap to just four points to championship leader Wehrlein.
The lights went out for one final time, with Cassidy, Evans and Wehrlein all soon running in the top three positions. However, cracks began to show through Cassidy's initial ATTACK MODE activations, with Evans claiming "gloves off" and Cassidy vocally unhappy at slipping back behind both his teammate and Wehrlein.
Oliver Rowland had also been busy, climbing up the grid from ninth to fourth and eventually passed Cassidy for third. The pack was then squeezed, resulting in a dramatic puncture for Cassidy and immediately ending his championship hopes. Now it was just Evans and Wehrlein left to fight, with both still to take their ATTACK MODE after their previous attempts were invalidated, which allowed Rowland into the lead.
The title contenders then took their activations again, with Evans crucially failing to activate it. He did manage to make it work on the third try, but by this time Wehrlein had swooped through to take second and done enough to see him crowned champion. For Rowland, a first home win in London was an unexpected result but a great end to a solid season.
