Edoardo Mortara has achieved his fifth career Julius Baer Pole Position, and his second consecutive first place start around the Jeddah Corniche Circuit with Mahindra Racing. The Swiss-Italian has been on excellent form this weekend, with double pole positions and a podium in yesterday’s race.
He will line-up alongside Jake Dennis, who has seen a big turnaround in performance, and managed to get into the Duels for the first time in Jeddah with Andretti. The two will start from the front-row ahead of lights out at 20:00 local.
Third is Antonio Felix da Costa for Jaguar TCS Racing, with Oliver Rowland fourth for Nissan after a tricky start to his weekend. Jean-Eric Vergne is fifth for Citroën Racing and Maximilian Guenther continued his impressive form DS PENSKE here in Jeddah, having been in the Duels for all four Jeddah E-Prix to date.
Several big names were knocked out early on including championship leader Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) who will start 11th and Miami race winner Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) who is 13th on the grid.
Final
Mortara took his second consecutive pole position here in Jeddah, after battling Season 9 World Champion Jake Dennis around the tight and twisty Jeddah track. Having only secured poles in Berlin until this weekend, the back-to-back polesitter will be hoping he can finally convert it into a win after a tricky start to yesterday’s race with some serious wheelspin off the start which dropped him back.
Semi Finals
Mortara’s magic continued with Mahindra, with this car looking so comfortable going around the kerbs of this Jeddah Corniche Circuit. He is the best qualifier on average this season, and this continues as he secured a place in the Final opposite Oliver Rowland who will start on the second row of the grid.
Da Costa took on Jake Dennis in the second Semi, with Porsche and Jaguar powertrains having taken nine of the last 10 pole positions. Dennis has not lost a Semi Final Duel since the opening race of last season, and that record continues as he beat Da Costa to a guaranteed start on the front row of the grid later today.
Quarter Finals
Maximilian Guenther (DS PENSKE) was up first alongside reigning World Champion Oliver Rowland. Guenther has reached the Duels at all four Jeddah E-Prix to be held so far, but didn’t proceed any further as it was Rowland who won his first Duel of the season.
Next was two-time champ Jean-Eric Vergne who went up against the almost-inevitable Edoardo Mortara, who continued his rapid pace around this Jeddah Corniche Circuit to get into the Semis. Mortara has the best record in Quarter Final Duels this season, including beating Vergne in São Paulo.
Jake Dennis got the better of Sebastien Buemi, with neither the Envision nor Andretti teams ever experiencing the duels in Jeddah before.
The final head-to-head in this stage was Nick Cassidy of Citroën Racing versus Antonio Felix da Costa, with the Season 6 champ setting the better lap to knock Cassidy out. Da Costa has now reached the Duels four times in five attempts with Jaguar and is the last driver on the grid who has started in the top-10 at every race this season.
Group A
Mortara continued his strong run of form, topping his session at the chequered flag. The Swiss driver will be looking to duplicate his pole position from yesterday around this Jeddah Corniche Circuit. Maximilian Guenther was second for DS PENSKE, with Oliver Rowland improving on his performance yesterday to proceed into the Duels. Jean-Eric Vergne took the final spot in fourth.
Despite his pace looking strong, Dan Ticktum just missed out on the Semi Finals in fifth by 0.020s. Other big names knocked out includes yesterday’s victor and championship leader Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) and podium finisher Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing).
Group B
Antonio Felix da Costa topped his group, going quickest ahead of Jake Dennis of Andretti. Joining them both in the Duels was Sebastien Buemi in third with Nick Cassidy getting the final spot.
Zane Maloney had his strongest qualifying of the season so far to slot into fifth, with Porsche’s Nico Müller down in eighth for Porsche. Mortara’s teammate Nyck de Vries ended in ninth, but he will be serving several penalties for changing of his car’s parts overnight.
