Formula E and UNICEF partnership supports 3.5 million young people in three years

Formula E and UNICEF today announced their groundbreaking three-year partnership has positively impacted more than 3.5 million children and young people around the globe, transforming their lives through innovative climate change interventions.

The partnership has exceeded its target of positively impacting 3 million children and young people in three years by more than 500,000.

As the first global sports organisation to partner with UNICEF back in 2021 to tackle climate change, the unique and ambitious partnership has led the way and helped UNICEF create impactful, sustainable and transformative climate change initiatives in each corner of the planet.

Through investment in UNICEF’s climate programmes as part of the Safe and Healthy Environment Fund, the collaboration focused on helping to create a planet where every child can live in a safe, clean and sustainable environment.

This is achieved by ensuring the services children rely on - such as education and healthcare - are resilient and that young people are empowered through knowledge- and skills- building to take climate action.

A key example of a localised initiative funded by the partnership is the network of rainwater capture and purification systems in schools across three Mexican states which positively impacted nearly 22,000 students, 1,276 teachers and their local communities.

Formula E and UNICEF’s partnership contributed towards UNICEF’s global climate work for children and supported holistic climate programmes around the world, which in 2023 included:

  • Reaching 23 million people in 63 countries with climate-resilient water, sanitation and hygiene services,
  • Bringing solar power to healthcare facilities in 67 countries,
  • Constructing more than 7,600 solar-powered water systems,
  • Integrating sustainability and climate action into education programmes in 73 countries, and
  • Engaging young people in climate action and policymaking in 124 countries.

Julia Palle, VP of Sustainability, Formula E, said:
“We’re thrilled that the three-year partnership with UNICEF has exceeded our target and benefitted more than 3.5 million children and young people around the globe. As the first global sport to partner with UNICEF around climate change, it’s been amazing to see the impact of our work come to life and the individuals that it has positively benefitted.

"We all have a role to play in looking after communities but also in mitigating the impacts of climate change, so am really proud of the work we have achieved together and the legacy it will leave for generations to come.”

Mohini Raichura-Brown, Chief Partnerships Officer, The UK Committee for UNICEF, said: “Children are the least responsible but most impacted by the climate crisis. Worldwide, UNICEF teams continue to work around the clock to address the most pressing issues children face, including those that are caused by the climate crisis.

"Thanks to Formula E’s contributions towards our climate programmes, UNICEF teams delivered incredible work to empower children to become active agents of change, whilst reducing the impacts of and adapting against the effects of the climate crisis. I’m incredibly proud of what our partnership with Formula E has achieved in helping UNICEF reach 3.5 million children worldwide since 2021.”
