Sustainability at the centre of Formula E's London finale

From grassroots social impact programmes like FIA Girls on Track hosting 170 young women over the weekend, and local community projects supported by the Better Futures Fund, to powering the event by renewable energy and significant waste management systems, social and environmental sustainability continues to be in Formula E’s DNA as it celebrates a decade of sustainable motorsport.

As Formula E maintains its position as the world’s most sustainable sport, it supports communities and the environment due to its wider purpose of accelerating sustainable human progress. This season, the championship has delivered bespoke cutting-edge initiatives in each race location that benefit both people and the planet.

Sustainability credentials at the 2024 Hankook London E-Prix include:

FIA Girls on Track

- Hosting 170 young women aged 12-18 at track for an immersive experience, taking this season’s total participation for the programme to more than 2,000 participants – more than doubling the total number of girls engaged during Season 9.

- The programme focuses on STEM education and gender inclusivity in motorsport, engaging girls from diverse communities in host cities.

- This year was the first to have events at every race location, including on track and university career talks.

- The day-long experience includes career talks, a Pit Lane Walk, watching FP1, activations in the Gaming Arena, E-Karting and educational partner workshops on-site, led by inspirational women from within the paddock

- In addition to the on-site event, on Thursday 11th July Formula E co-hosted a women in motorsport panel discussion at City Hall in collaboration with Greater London Authority and Local London Careers Hub. The event was attended by over 100 girls from local schools in East London, alongside the Deputy Mayor for Business, Howard Dawber.

Better Futures Fund

- The Formula E Better Futures Fund is supporting Community Food Enterprise (CFE) in London with a donation of €25,000 to purchase an electric van to enhance its operations and run community workshops to educate families on food preparation and cooking.

- CFE, an award-winning social enterprise and charity in East London, addresses food poverty in one of London's most deprived areas. East London is home to some of London’s most deprived boroughs with some of the highest levels of food poverty; 32% of Newham children lived in food poverty in 2023, and the area had the second-highest food poverty rate in London.

- The Better Futures Fund, established by Formula E during Season 10, aims to create a lasting positive impact in host cities by supporting local initiatives that address social inequalities and environmental issues.

- Formula E and members of the championship ecosystem will be visiting the CFE workshop during race week to support food collections and deliveries as part of its commitment to the charity.

Powered by renewable energy

- The 2024 Hankook London E-Prix, including the charging of all GEN3 race cars, will be powered by 100% renewable power, coming from a mix of solar, wind and hydroelectric energy sources used by the ExCeL’s power provider.

Other sustainability measures

- At least eight Hydration Stations will be available for fans across the site, with 20,000 reusable cups being repurposed from Season 9.

- Formula E’s sustainability education programme, Driving Force, will be present in the kids’ zone within the Allianz Fan Village to empower the next generation of changemakers. Delivered via an innovative online platform, modules cover topics including air pollution, circular economy and diversity, equity and inclusion.

- Formula E’s thought leadership event platform Change.Accelerated.Live will take place on Friday, bringing together industry leaders, policy makers and experts in sustainable energy and climate action to accelerate the transition to achieve net zero emissions.

- The Allianz Fan Village main stage on Saturday and Sunday will showcase music sets by local female acoustic artists in collaboration with agency TNAM. TNAM connect grassroots female and non-binary musicians with support to take their music to the next level.

- The Inspiration Hour community tour will engage up to 200 individuals from up to 8 different community groups, including schools, local government initiatives, charities and organisations driving diversity in motorsport.

- Sign language specialists will be at the venue to help enhance the experience and communication to fans when watching the race and other event entertainment.

Julia Palle, VP of Sustainability, Formula E, said: “At Formula E sustainability is in our DNA and at the heart of decision making, and with the Hankook London E-Prix this is no different. As the most sustainable sport on the planet, we pride ourselves on delivering impactful programmes and initiatives that benefit the people in our host communities and the wider environment where we race.

"This weekend we continue to make sure our race weekend is delivered to the highest possible sustainability standards, while championing and supporting diversity, community and environmental action.”
