Nyck de Vries arrived in Sanya on the back of one of the most successful periods of his racing career.
Just one week before the 2026 Sanya E-Prix, the Dutchman stood on the top step of the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, claiming outright victory alongside Toyota Gazoo Racing teammates Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi.
It was the biggest endurance racing triumph of de Vries' career, delivering Toyota Gazoo Racing's sixth overall victory at Circuit de la Sarthe. The win also made de Vries the first Dutch driver to claim overall honours at Le Mans since Jan Lammers in 1988.
His triumph in France came just weeks after another milestone. In Monaco, de Vries claimed Mahindra Racing's first victory of the GEN3 era and the team's first Formula E win since Alex Lynn triumphed in London during Season 7.
INTERVIEW: Nyck de Vries on his magical Mahindra win in Monaco
De Vries arrived in Sanya full of confidence, and that momentum continued throughout the weekend. He eventually left Sanya with another trophy after securing a third-place finish. Although he crossed the line in fourth, a post-race penalty for Felipe Drugovich promoted the Mahindra Racing driver onto the podium, capping another encouraging weekend for the 31-year-old as he continued his push to finish the season strongly.
In Shanghai, de Vries would add further points to his championship tally, with a fifth place finish in Round 12 - promoting him to tenth in the drivers' standings.
From Mercedes-EQ to Mahindra Racing
De Vries' Formula E career began in impressive fashion with Mercedes-EQ. On his championship debut in Diriyah 2019, he claimed pole position and quickly established himself as one of the series' standout talents.
A maiden Formula E victory in the opening race of the following year (Season 7) laid the foundations for a title-winning campaign, culminating in de Vries lifting the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Berlin.
However, his career took a different direction in 2022.
Following an impressive substitute appearance for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix, where he scored points on his Formula One debut, de Vries earned a full-time drive with AlphaTauri for the 2023 Formula One season. His move to Formula One brought his first Formula E spell to an end.
HISTORY: Who are all the Formula E champions from Seasons 1 to 11?
When he returned to Formula E with Mahindra Racing in 2024, there was an inevitable period of readjustment. He finished the campaign with just six championship points as he adapted to the significantly different characteristics of the GEN3 car. Last season, however, offered encouraging signs of progress, with three podium finishes, this year, those improvements are beginning to translate into consistently competitive results.
With found rounds remaining, the Dutchman has the opportunity to build on his recent momentum. Having rediscovered both confidence and form, de Vries heads into the closing stages of the season looking increasingly like the world champion who once set the benchmark in Formula E.
